In Praise of Fruit & Vegetables! :-)

Hi everyone,

This post is partly for grace111 - because we talked about the fact that where I live (Guernsey) we have Hedge Veg - where people can buy fresh home-grown produce at the side of the road, via an honesty box - so I've photographed 2 of those Hedge Veg stalls that I saw today - they are on the left-hand-side of the photo collage.

On the right, is the produce I brought home with me today - which I bought from various places, but mainly supermarkets - I think because it's Sunday they'd reduced some prices - and I love a bargain, so made the most of that. But I do buy the 'home-grown' 'hedge veg' vegetables quite frequently as well - as they are so delicious as well as fresh!

The cuddly vegetable is supposed to be an Aubergine. I got him because he's my favourite colour and he was very smiley. :-)

Hi Zest, this is great and I think its great people selling off their surplus and as you say they are very fresh, I did wonder if you could resist those large vine toms...Great selection of veggies you have there anyway and they're all favourites of mine.

Now I think that you bought mister aubergine because you're a big softie...😊

lol - I think you're right on the 'big softie' - and I knew you'd appreciate those Large Vine Tomatoes - they were beckoning my name.

I was wondering if I have a 'favourite veg' but it's too hard to whittle it down - I like so many!

thanks Zest its very interesting, love grace xoxo

Hi Grace,

I am glad you like them, I wanted to show you a couple of actual Hedge Veg stalls, as we talked about it before. I agree, the veggies look very healthy - shiny and colourful. :-)

I agree that veggies do seem to have some miracle power nothing else seems to be able to provide. Too bad for Arthritis sufferers regarding the nightshade veggies. You know you cannot please everybody.

Hi Hidden

Thanks for your reply - it's good that there are such a range of veggies out there, so we can find what works best for each of us. :-)

Ok , so i went to see my dr Friday, I have mobility issues and have just been prescribed gabapentin (not taken any yet) due to reading the sudr effecfs. I suffer with sleep trouble and lethargy as it is

. So my bloods were all ok apart from a hugh cholesterol reading .. I was shocked to say the least as I have to eat healthy due to liver disease. I have just ordered benecol drinks , yogurt etc. No spread as I domt use any butter. Don't have potatoes only sweet, I have rice maybe twice a month, rest is salad with chicken or fish.. I do however devour a 100g bar of chocolate per night 😏. So my question is , is it fat you have to cut down or sugar as I'm baffled.

Modern research says ... it’s the sugar, especially the sugar added to foods like chocolate, breakfast cereal, low fat yoghurts etc. Some people may also need to cut down on fat.

If you can, perhaps try porridge for breakfast? It seems to help to lower cholesterol levels. And find an alternative to the chocolate?

Thank you panel, I don't knkw why but I thought it was fat , due to cholestrol being fatty like deposit in the arteries. I have now changed to porridge, but just oats not any with added syrup etc.. I have a fridge full of fruit now, I do know its my love of chocolate thats causing it ! Best seek an alternative version, thank you for your help 😊

Hi Millie09

Glad that Penel has given you such a great reply - and I hope you're enjoying your weekend. I also enjoy chocolate, but I tend to choose the dark chocolate (less sugar in that one) and I try to limit myself to 4 pieces - but maybe you could limit yourself even more - say try just 2 pieces? Or like you say, have an alternative. Good luck!

Thank you zest, yes I am taking all your advice on-board, was a shock when my Dr told me on Friday! .. really goes to show even when eating what we think is healthy may not always be righy. Hope your weekend was good. 😊

Just to add, there is a genetic condition that can cause high cholesterol. If a change in diet makes no difference you may need referring to a specialist.

Actually, my sister has high cholesterol, she did manage to bring it down over 3 months, my aunt has it too , not sure about mum or dad, but mum passed away to heart failure whrn she was only 51 yrs old , and my gtandad,.. so thank you for bringing that to my attention.

I adore fresh figs. Can't get them at the moment so I am jealous. 😊

I have just realised that I have posted to a two-year old feed?? I don't know how on earth that has happened, especially as I don't usually post in the Healthy Eating forum. I can only call it a sheer fluke. You must have wondered what was going on πŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒ Sorry!

Hi springcross

Don't worry - it was lovely to hear from you! I'm still around, and I got a notification, as you'd posted in my thread - hence I was able to appreciate your reply and responded! :-)

I did post about fresh figs this week, as I had some in my breakfast... :-)

I don't know, I clicked on it to see if maybe there was a 'related post' alongside that might have lead you astray, but I can see it wasn't there, so I have no idea how that happened. Like you said - a fluke? :-)
