Kalettes or flower sprouts ~ this month's unusual vegetable...

I've put these in a stir fry a few times, & found them s good alternative to my favourite cavolo nero when I can't buy that in summer. They look like teeny tiny cabbages & taste like mild sprouts. I ate quite a few raw whilst chopping & stirring, & think they'd be good in a salad with the harder stalk removed. Also as alternative veg for those odd folks who don't like sprouts.

For any Withnail & I fans, Uncle Monty would most certainly like one of these in his lapel. ;)

They look really nice, Mel, I feel sure I'd really like them, as I love sprouts! I agree with you that Uncle Monty (from Withnail & I) would favour one in his lapel. :-)

Zest :-) xx

"Flowers are simply tarts; prostitutes for the bees."

Think I watched the video at least five times before seeing it on a cinema screen, so had missed the tiny veg. He's not wearing one here: youtube.com/watch?v=3KbOq4u... :)

I may watch that film again, now you've reminded me of it. I know it's one of my hubby's favourites. :-)

Have you seen Skeletons, or Saving Grace? They're similarly odd & funny. :)

Most of the food we eat is from hybrid breeds, they've been grown for as long as people have been farming.

From your link: "And no, in case you're wondering, hybrid vegetables are not the same as genetically modified crops. While genetically modified vegetables have been changed or tampered within their DNA, hybrid vegetables are created by simply cross breeding compatible plants.

Why isn't there any resistance to this vegetable? Kalettes are a hybrid vegetable and clearly a product of genetic modification. But because the new hybrid was developed using traditional breeding methods, it doesn’t face the same resistance that genetically engineered crops do."

Waitrose have a no GM policy for their own branded products: waitrose.com/home/inspirati...

"Genetic modification

No Waitrose food is genetically modified - all food and ingredients are from conventional or organic crops. Our internal systems and external verification platforms track the use of soya as ingredients in own label products to ensure they come from a non GM source."

in reply to BadHare

Hi BadHare, they were introduced in the US in 2010 and were rebranded in 2014 because of poor sales and they have used hybridisation combined with modern GM techniques and according to the manufacturer they are still tweaking the seeds. So they are what they are.

I'm just a great believer in 'us' the consumer knowing exactly what we are eating.

The 150g bag was 75p, half price, so cheaper than my usual cavolo. Not so bad, & only 7% non-organic veg to my ribollita, so don't think I'm genetically doomed yet... ;)

Sprout tops are quite similar, if you can get those, though they're a bit more of a tough texture.
