Going on a diet after health scare

hi there

I have decided to start eating better after a health scare which will involve cutting back on salt and sugar, having loads of fruit and veg in the diet and cutting down on sweets.

I have decided to do this for me not just to please someone else.

good for you to say your doing it for yourself. stoping the sweet is a great start. ☺

Hi jo, good luck and you're in good company on here 😊 I'd take it one step and one meal at a time and it'll soon be second nature. 🍎

Hi Jo, I'm so happy for you! We are going through this journey also, so you definitely not alone!

I must say... you are off to a great and healthy start. The fact you are doing it for yourself and no one else is great! It took me ages to reach that point, now that I have and currently eating the healthiest I ever have.

Please keep us updated and please post some of your meals as you go, we are always interested in sharing meal ideas! Helps keep us all motivated! :)

All the best Jo! :)

I think you should not cut down but cut out sweets completely. It has no value and just encourages a sweet tooth. Instead try 70%+ dark chocolate. A small amount would be good for your health.

May I ask what exactly is/was the health scare?

Be careful of media reports they often simplify things and get fundamentals wrong. This can be exacerbated by struggling to avoid offending advertisers & sponsors. I consider refined sugar & salt & oil as all bad for us.

In the What the Health film much debate afterwards was around whether sugar or oils were implicated in diabetes. The mainstream view is that sugar is the culprit. The What The Health view is that oils are at fault. But if you watch the film carefully, they are not absolving sugar, just stating that research shows what the cause is, ie fats/oils. Once the diabetes is established then sugar takes up the strain as being a huge part of problem.

I had a pulmonary embolism and it has frightened me into taking steps to help myself.
