Avoid anything containing unfermented soya as it’s the worst goitrogenic food. It reduces production, conversion, & absorption of thyroid hormones.

Most people find eating a gluten free diet reduces the amount of autoimmune antibodies. It takes a full three months to remove gliadin antibodies from the body, so this is not a quick fix. Look out for Jerry’s excellent GF recipes.

Some people find removing dairy from their diet helps.

As a lot of thyroid hormone conversion is carried out in the gut, good digestion is extremely important. I eat kefir every day, which has benefitted my health.

If you’re not already a member of Thyroid UK, it would be a good idea to join. The admins & clever folks on that forum are excellent, especially with regard to adequate & appropriate medication & the nutrition levels that are essential to good hormone health. They have helped me resolve 40 years of undiagnosed thyroid hormone issues. It’s useful to post your most recent blood test results, including TSH, free T3 & T4, as well as iron, ferritin, & vitamins , B12 & folate. Most people are magnesium deficient, which causes a wide range of health issues. Some find supplements of zinc & selenium reduce hashimoto’s antibodies.

Whilst I’m not diabetic, I have an interest in functional medicine, ie, eating for good health. I’ve previously posted articles on treating type 2 diabetes with diet from The Guardian newspaper. I’m replying on my phone, so can’t provide links, so look up Chris Kresser, & Michael Mosley’s websites. Both wrote extensively about diabetes, CK is especially good regarding the links between autoimmune diseases, diet, & digestion. MM has a few good videos on YouTube, including clips from television documentaries.

As a start, try avoiding all processed foods, especially those that damage our gut health such as artificial sweeteners & margarines. Take care to eat fresh unprocessed food that’s free from chemical additives. Look for probiotic foods that you can eat regularly to improve your gut health. Make sure you have good levels of the nutrients I mentioned above. Any deficiency in one of these will prevent your thyroid hormones working effectively. Try to take gentle exercise so that you conserve your body’s available T3. Gentle walking, Yoga & Pilates are good for weight bearing exercise that ate not aerobic, so won’t use up your reserves. Make sure you are optimally medicated with thyroid hormones & nutrients ~ your blood test results will confirm this.

Ask me to explain if you don’t understand anything I’ve written, or ask on TUK. 🌞
