Hi my name is Gar'ee and I'm in my late 40's and weigh approx 23 stone. I feel so unhealthy and would love to loss weight but I also suffer from depression since Christmas 2012. This is when I put on 9 stone. Does anyone have any advice, I have tried everything

Hi Gar'ee,

Welcome to the Healthy Eating forum. You mentioned a few things, and I wanted to give you some links that might be helpful - there is a Weight loss community in Health unlocked called 'NHS weight loss' and they are very supportive and have lots of things going on, so that might be a good resource for you:

Finally, for some support regarding your depression, you could have a look at this community, in addition to whatever support you are currently getting for your depression. I hope your GP has been helpful - counselling can be helpful as an option too.

I doubt you really have tried everything or you wouldn't be overweight and feeling so unhealthy. Like all of us, Gee08, you are a mammal and need to eat in the way that nature intended and designed us all to eat. That is with natural products.

Have you ever seen cans, sachets, frozen or packed ready-meals etc. growing on trees or in the ground, in fact anywhere. Of course not, because our bodies were never intended to be used and abused by being forced to try and digest such artificial concoctions.

All you need to do is give nature a chance by consuming, for the most part, just what she intended us to eat i.e raw fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. I've heard people say "but I don't like fruit and vegetables" etc. That is rubbish, simply an excuse used by those whose palates have been so compromised by years of misuse that they have lost the ability to know what is good for them. But the palate can be restored, a little at a time maybe, to appreciate the goodness and nourishment provided for us by natures own store.

I'm not advocating anyone should become a vegan or vegetarian. A nice hot meal with meat can be good for us too from time to time. But do try to make the majority of what goes into your body that which it was designed to eat. I can assure you it can make a world of difference.

Hello!

My friend uses slimming world and has used weight watchers in the past and they helped her. She says it helped because it was with other people.

Dieting tends to help on the short term. However, with restrictive diets, you're depriving yourself of the food you need and that can lead to binge eating and you may gain weight.

More exercise maybe? According to online measurements, one mile burns around 100 calories. That may seem like little but if you reduce your calorie intake by a bit and increase walking / exercising, it may help with weight loss.

Hi Gar'ee,

You know, once I have also had such sad times when I was weighting 140kg at the age of 35. That was a disaster for me, however my family was supporting me.

I decided to change my lifestyle upside down like literally, and started visiting doctors and health advisers. I am now using only nutritional healthy food which helped my body lose 53kg. I won't say my weight is WOW right now, but let's agree that there is some difference in 140kg and 87kg.

I would advice you to read a lot! Read on the web, visit health advisers.

Hi, sorry to hear this. I also have depression which has contributed to various eating disorders in the past-not saying you do have an eating disorder. I just wondered if you are on anti depressants or not? They can contribute sometimes to weight gain. Have you sought advice from your doctor on depression and weight loss? Also, I second walking as exercise. I walk everywhere :)

I recommend you follow Chef AJ and her ultimate weight loss program. It is a whole-food plant based low-oil program with weekly videos on youtube and so much more. Cannot recommend her channel highly enough.

She was seriously overweight for most of her life, had thyroid problems and so much more. She is not someone who is out to sell anything but rather impart great information.

I know exactly how you are feeling depression can hit anyone at anytime in ones life as we are all on a journey --low self esteem is awful & comfort eating just seems to grab one & before we know it the scales read numbers we have never seen before so one feels depressed & so we eat again ---take baby sets each day by saying to yourself "YOU are good enough ,Smart enough ,Beautiful enough Believe in it & never let insecurities run your life "For now I need to look after ME its not selfish but self -filling --I had a ghastly day yesterday but I survived by writing in my journal maybe a journal could help you --remember you are a precious "soul" --for a quote I read yesterday maybe a good one for you "the best preparation for tomorrow is doing the best today " take care

You are young, and you have a lot of life yet to live....and, I know how disheartening it can feel to have gained a lot weight....but losing weight is something that is achievable.

Just think how much you could achieve in the next 5 years!

My suggestion would be to ask your doctor for help with your diet so as to help you with the weight loss and the depression, and to help improve your overall well being....both now and in the future. Perhaps your doctor can help you directly, or perhaps your doctor can help you by referring you on to a dietitian.

If you find you are struggling to get help from your doctor, why not try and talk to an organisation such as Mind....as well as advising you on how to deal with your doctor (to get the help you want/need), they may also be able to signpost you to other useful sources of help: mind.org.uk/information-sup...
