Rainbow Diet

I have just watched an episode of Doctor in the House on iplayer (very good) he recommended the rainbow diet to promote gut health to a teenage boy who was eating well and exercising but failing to lose weight- it seems the boy didn't have optimal gut diversity and the diet was a huge success. I'm struggling to find any information about the specific diet the doctor used in the programme does anyone have any ideas?

he just recommeded that the boy eat lots of bright coloured fruit and vegeatabls. what was important about this boy was he has something wrong with his insulin. and he was putting on weight so fast and his blood sugar what very very high and the highest the doctor had seen. to help his blood sugar the doctor told him to eat two apples a day with cinnamon on them and said it was best if the apples were hot. so i'v been stewing two bags of eating apples every week now since i saw that programme and he was told to put cinnamon into the apples to keep his blood sugar regular. i put cinnamon into my rice crispies to. You must by the correct cinnamon and not the one that you get in the supermarket as its not true cinnamon and can cause liver damage if taken to much i have a link which i put up about cinnamon i will go and find it and copy and paste it here for you. those stewed apples with cinnamon are amazing. i do buy eating apples as i dont put any sugar in them. infact since i saw that programme i'v stopped taking sugar completely you can also put cinnamon in your porridge and im sure you can find other ways to use it. i got sri lankan cinnamon as that same as ceylon one its the same place they have just changed the countrys name. you wont find it in the super marker. i get mine in real foods even the health food shops had that bad cassia cinnamon that you will read about. holland and barrat had the bad one to. best to get organic from a real food shop. livestrong.com/article/5165...

Thank you so much this is really helpful - it was definitely his gut biome that the dr hypothesised influenced the insulin resistance and weight as he showed him two sweet jars one with the gut variety he needed vs his own which wasn't diverse - he gave him charts which told him which foods fell into which area of rainbow (and probably how much he needed??) I really wanted the charts but can't find them anywhere. There is a rainbow diet book but it seems to be a few years old and linked to cancer prevention so I don't think it is directly the diet the dr focussed on?! Thanks again for the cinnamon link I will def be doing this too!

I appreciate that you want to stop sugar but do you realise how much there in Rice Krispies?

Yes, but I'm taking it slowly. Thanks for your concern.

I think that is a sensible approach. You will know yourself how far you need to go.

im a t jenny and was drinking many cups of tea a day. iv stopped the sugar in tea and coffee and i eat as much organic fruit veg and dairy and meat as i can although i dont take much dairy. im quite pleased with my progress now im there is even sugar in bread. if i was to give it all up at once i would fail. the ony thing i ever gave up at once 100% was alcohol. now 29years sober.

A balanced way of thinking is so much better than having strict rules. If you are unsatisfied with what you have achieved then the mind can have such a negative effect.

It also sounds like your experience of cutting alcohol has put in a good place to manage your carb intake. Please don’t consider this patronising but well done you deserve credit for what you have achieved.

Herbal tea is good for you but you honey natural honey. There's this bread that they sell at the store called killer Dave's bread. It's the closest thing to sprouted bread there is out there. It's not that crappy enriched bread.

A person needs some sugar/carbs through out the day or the body can't function properly because the brain isn't getting enough of what is needed. If you don't eat any carbs/sugar, your blood sugar can drop very low/pass out. Both of these aren't good for anyone diabetic or not.

Sorry confused by your comment this is not low carb it is an add on to the boys diet That was already healthy i.e. low in processed foods and refined sugars but becasuse the boy had poor gut diversity he was encouraged to eat one food from each colour of the rainbow to promote gut health - think 5 a day +++. Very healthy he is a gp not a guru! By doing this the boy s insulin returned to normal as did his weight.

I have a different view about sugar / carbs. Not essential. One can live on proteins and fats. Body can produce required gl by gng.

True, but everyone is different.

I believe all autoimmune diseases are caused from an unhealthy gut. I think the rainbow diet is a whole bunch of different kinds of vegetables different colors. I think if you have a leaky gut then anything you eat won't evenly Digest and all the vitamins won't spread out evenly. Just a theory that's why I was trying to eat Probiotic foods no processed no sugar I will do honey though natural. I feel so much better since changing my diet. Sugars gluten processed all bad. Pretty much anything you get out of the ground I feel is the way to go. Again that's how I feel just a theory not a scientist or a doctor but everything I've read and watched as kind of concluded everything I've said

Oh wow just saw your comment on my home page. I gotta recommend kefir to you. Never tried it myself (I've made some at home but it's not ready yet), but people rave about this stuff. It's a probiotic drink. Let me link you to this video of a guy explaining the whole process of making your own (it's really darn easy). I wish I could tell you how much it has helped me, but I haven't tried it yet.

I'm definitely going to try this drink when I get back in the States. I leave in 2 days so I can't wait to try it. I will let you know how it tastes to me.

Cool. I've been taking it for 3 days so far. Tastes like a liquid version of greek yoghurt which is fine for me, but you can always add vanilla extract for flavour.

I would add vanilla bean instead of vanilla extract

i agree about eating things that come out of the ground and as little processed food as possible i feel so much better since i dont buy microvawe meals now as i used to enjoy microwave currys. i make as much as possible from scratch and buy as much organic as i can. i have a reconsurcted bile duct and fatty liver. i cant believe how much better i feel for changing my diet. its quite remarkable.
