Want to shed the extra kilos? Add plenty of vegetables, grains and nuts to your diet

NEW YORK: Want to shed those extra kilos? Go vegetarian. According to new research, eating vegetables, grains, legumes, fruits and nuts may be almost twice as effective in reducing body weight as conventional low-calorie diets.

I haven't eaten meat for 30 years.

Most veg*ns I know are slim, but a few are morbidly obese, & look hypothyroid. It's important not to eat processed vegetarian food as it usually contains processed soya.

The original study is here:

Interestingly, although the intervention diet is described as vegetarian, it is mostly vegan as animal products were limited to one dairy yogurt per day. (Not sure why they didn't go for a completely vegan diet)

I could easily be vegetarian (I only eat chicken and an extremely small amount of beef (probably about once a month and I also eat fish)) but unfortunately I have IBS and my system cannot tolerate a fair few vegetables and I also peel the skin off fruit. I ate raw spinach this week (I don't like cooked) and I wasn't very well yesterday and the spinach was the only different thing I had eaten.

Thank you for your response and I will look that up. I do exercise albeit not yoga - I love power walking and cycling.
