Surgery is the only remedy for cataract .

Only surgery I am afraid. Nothing you can try at home .

In a normal eye, light passes through the transparent lens to the retina. The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy (e.g. clumping of protein) from a cataract, the image you see will be blurred.

Surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. However, not every patient requires surgery. In which case, a healthy diet (e.g. avoid diabetes; no fizzies etc) and exercising (e.g. palming and rubbiing) are beneficial. Every case is different, research on what makes your condition improves. Exercising is important.

For a long time I took an eye health supplement containing high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in the hope that it would help remedy my cataracts. It MAY have slowed their development a bit but in the end I decided to have the surgery.

The day after my first eye was done felt like a miracle, the result was fantastic. I immediately booked a second op and two months later had another excellent result. Don't be afraid to have the surgery, it is not a comfortable procedure but it takes only about 20 minutes and is virtually painless. Go for it, I doubt you will ever regret it.

Incidentally on my final check-up after the ops the surgeon showed me the pictures of my eyes and said they were otherwise excellent. I put that down to the regular use of the supplement and i continue to take it regularly.

Hi Happydodderer

Can I ask what brand supplement you are taking? I don't have cataracts, but I do take Vision Defender AMD which has lutein and zeaxanthin as part of its ingredients for my macular degeneration. My sister has cataracts and just wondering what supplement may be helpful for her. Thanks in advance.

The one I take is EYEWISE from naturesbest.co.uk. The supplement also contains zinc, bilberry, blackberry, and grape seed. Incidentally I have no connection with the company other than as a customer. I hope this is helpful to you and your sister.
