Just had my gall bladder removed due to pancreatitis any eating advise gratefully needed.

Hi I had to have my gall bladder out last week due to me having acute pancreatitis. I was told to resume eating a normal low fat diet post surgery. The whole experience has been a big wake up call for me and I'm determined to get my eating right for life now. I' been able to lose over two stone since February but still have another five stone to go before I'm in a healthy BMI range.

My plan so far has to just eat as much unprocessed food as possible. A typical day's eating post surgery has been;

Breakfast: third cup porridge oats made with water

Lunch: slice of chicken, boiled potatoes, green beans, carrots, low fat Caesar dressing.

Dinner: chicken and vegetable broth with 100g whole grain rice in.

I've found I'm constipated now, any advise?

I find I get constipated if I'm not getting enough fibre. You're having oats and rice and some vegatables which are good sources but you still might not be getting enough.

In the short term a fibre supplement like fybogel could help, and taking lactulose makes it easier to pass stools.

Dietry wise, beans and lentils are really good fibre sources, I'm vegan so it's easier for me as I base most of my meals around these instead of meat.

when you are advised to eat a low fat diet due to gallstone pain either before or after removal. Iv had mine removed. it means. no creamy pasta no pizza and no fatty cheese or creams. do not buy low fat items as they are chemically treated and usually always full of sugar to substitute the taste. No fried foods. plenty fresh fruit and vegetables i eat lots of nuts to which are full of good fats also take flax seeds i grind them up in a grinder with almonds and sunflower seeds. i put this on my porrige. 3 tablespoons of flax seeds 2 of sunflower seeds and one of almonds i keep this in the fridge. nuts and seeds are very good for you.when you have chicken remove the skin. grill your food instead of frying it. if you have trouble digesting your food eat smaller meals you can have more smaller meals. try not to buy ready meals as they are usually full of sugar and salt .i do fry my fish in a litte oil. it may take some time for you to eat properly after having your gallbladder out. if your goint to have dressing please use the normal one and have less rather than having anything that is labeld low fat. as its chemically treated and not good. baked potato is good too. your meal sounded really good apart from the low fat caesar dressing. for your constipation have some prunes you can buy them in the supermarket try and get the ones in fruit juice and not syrup or you can rinse them under the tap. if you have some fresh fruit daily and vegetables and your porrige you will soon go to the toilet i find flax seeds very good for this. although i'v been on pain killers for other problems and has to take a couple of laxido at times to get me moving. also try and get some exercise like a good brisk walk as this all helps to keep the system funcioning and drinking plenty of water. i sip water throught the day every day. 'iv got into the habit of doing this and making all my own meals too. there is a part on this forum for health eating you may got lots of good advice there to. i use that forum just go to the top of the page and click on my communities , there you will find browse forums or go to the search box at the top right hand side and type in health eating. wishing you well and hoping that you have a speedy recovery take it easy too, many of us have had our gallbladders out and we are always here to share or experience with you. love grace xoxoxo

I hope you're feeling comfortable after your surgery, and that you're recuperating ok. I know you have got some constipation, so I hope that resolves. I saw an article that looks helpful, but I can see you've already had some very helpful suggestions as well:

Hi Sharshargabor wishing you a great recovery and better health in the future. Like you I had to have mine removed some years ago and had to reduce fatty foods from my menu..

I have increased eating lovely fish.. smoked haddock, tuna steaks.. no fat but if you enjoy mackerel you get some healthy oils... lots to choose from and lots of variety in how to cook them too. Eggs are low fat, no fat if you only eat the whites 🤣😂🤣

Whatever you eat.. make it something you enjoy and investigate your recipe options.. it's not a life sentence but an opportunity to gain better health for your future.

The biggest help I have found to keep comfortable in all aspects of daily life is to ensure you are drinking enough.. A huge factor in constipation.
