I was diagnosed with Vasculitis 3weeks ago and taking a high dose of Steriods so wandered if you could help me with some simple recipes for a low sodium, salt and sugar diet. I lived on cola and chocolate before my diagnosis (I'm only a size 8 and really don't want to put loads of weight on)

Thank you x

I had vasculitis a few years ago, so you have my sympathy.

I am on a no sugar and no refined carb diet but I do eat natural sugars in fruit but I choose those with low amounts such as strawbs not ripe bananas or raisons.

You are better off without the cola and chocolate. If you need to eat chocs then choose 70%+ dark choc.

Here are few ideas that you can make at home:

• Lentil Curry & Brown Rice. I mix frozen peas into the rice towards the end of cooking.

• Roast Chicken with veg etc.

• Stir fried chicken and vegetables chinese style. Lemon chicken? Would the soya sauce be too salty?

• Soft Goat's Cheese Salad. I like it with a mixture of salad leaves, tomatos etc plus fried mushrooms. Then put the goat's cheese on top to melt over the warm mushrooms.

• Tomato, Cucumber salad with chives mixed with Olive Oil and Tamari (or Soya Sauce). Leave out the tamari if it is too salty. Left in the fridge the flavour develops.

• Fresh Lemon Sole en papillote. I cheat as my local supermarket puts the fish in a cook in bag so I just put in the oven.

• I mix my own muesli using organic ingredients from the local health shop. My muesli is made from wholegrain cereals, seeds and flaked almonds. No dried fruit.

None of the above recipes would put weight on.

Hi Amber. Here are some food/diet ideas in general (not recipes) on dr. weil's website:

Dr. Weil suggests following his anti-inflammatory diet as well as the measures listed below that can bring about dramatic improvement in patients with autoimmune disorders:

Eliminate cow’s milk and cow’s milk products (substitute other calcium sources)

Eat more fruits and vegetables (make sure that they are organically grown)

Eliminate polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils, all foods (such as deep-fried foods) that might contain trans-fatty acids. Use extra-virgin olive oil as your main fat

Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Take two to three grams of a molecularly distilled fish oil supplement each day

Take anti-inflammatory herbs such as ginger and turmeric. Dr. Weil recommends unsweetened turmeric tea, as well as a combination of ginger, turmeric, and other botanicals with anti-inflammatory properties.

Consider taking grape seed extract, a source of powerful antioxidant compounds called OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins). Research has shown these compounds to be useful in protecting blood vessels, making them more elastic and less likely to leak.

Hope that helps too.
