Overeating and Depression

Hi

I'm new to this community, I belong to the Asthma one and receive great support there.

I have been going through an acute episode of depression and anxiety for the last 5 months. This has made it easy for me to indulge in comfort eating with an attitude of "it's up to me what I eat, if I want it I'll have it", which leads to me feeling depressed and remorseful several hours later or just a massive failure in the morning.

I've lost 3st in the past with Slimming World so I have all the info I need to do it again. This time I have no willpower or motivation. The depression makes me crave sweet stuff or cars. The overeating makes me depressed and on it goes. I'm nearly back up to my original weight, I feel gross, ugly, incompetent and always out of breath!

I need help but don't know where to start.

Thank you for allowing me to post here. Maybe this will be the start I need?.

Best wishes to all here.

Hi Palmo,

Welcome to the NHS weight loss community. You are very welcome. I'd like to suggest you have a read of our Welcome Newbie post first, to find out what kind of things are available in the forum, and the things that current and past members have mentioned there - it's a long thread, but really good! It's in the Pinned posts section (top right-hand-side of the homepage).

We have a weekly weigh-in session too, it's going on today, so do have a look at the latest thread to see if you think you might like to join us for that - it's in the Events section (below the Pinned posts).

If you can't find anything, just ask and someone will reply. It's a friendly and supportive forum, and I hope you'll enjoy being part of this community.

Glad you're not craving cars ;-) Regarding carbs, we don't deprive ourselves of any food nutrient when following the NHS 12 week plan, so maybe have a look at that to see if you like the look of it. It's really good - you'll find a link to it in the Welcome Newbie post.

Have a great week.

Lowcal :-)

Hello Palmo. If you want to change then it will happen but you need to really want it. You say you feel gross and ugly - perhaps this is how you feel after you have over-indulged? I felt like you did once. I had to make a change, for my health more than anything. I have to admit it was tough to be begin with and I would weigh myself and be cross that the weight wasn't coming off quick enough. With weight loss you need patience. Patience is key :-) Once you start eating differently and feeling a difference (you have done it before) it encourages you to lose more weight and you will feel positive about it. Have a look online at some clean eating, healthy recipes. Remember a lot of food that is laden with sugar and fat makes us crave it even more. One of the hardest things is giving up sugar but if you can do it - you will be guaranteed weight loss. Good luck to you x

Thank you, you are right about my feelings occurring after the overeating. I start with good intentions too. My weight loss has always been about health, mainly due to asthma and a pulmonary embolism in 2006. I decided that weight loss would help and it did. Since 2010 I have had a lot of personal issues, including the sudden death of my fiance, and have moved 9 times which hasn't helped anything. I am the only one who can help me but just being able to share all this helps a lot and I appreciate you taking the time to reply xx

No problem - there is always someone here to listen and will take time for you, remember you are not alone. Are you settled now in your property? Moving is soo stressful and I am so so sorry to hear of the death of your fiancé. As I said before if you really want it, it will happen - you can do it - we're all in this together, we're a family :-) x

Yes I have been in a house share with 3 lovely people since 2014 .We did not know each other beforehand but have become close friends. I am lucky in having quite a few close friends, but although encouraged to, I don't like to burden them with my problems. You know what it's like? X
