Simple changes I could make, I need an idiots guide please.

Hi guys this is my first post in to healthy eating. I have stage 4 Endometriosis effecting my entire digestive system. I get long bouts of constipation and massive bloating. I'm tea-total but I do smoke about 8-10 a day. There's not much I won't eat. At the moment my diet is quite crap I eat so much junk food, processed, quite low dairy intake, and I like salt. I'm slowly killing myself basically!

Simple changes/swaps, recipes, I'm open to most things xx

The simplest and easiest way to eat healthily is to try and eat as naturally as possible. 

Ask yourself; is this food "man-made" (processed) or did it grow in the ground, above the ground or in a tree? (natural foods).  For your protein foods (if you are not a vegetarian) - can it easily be recognised as meat, fish or fowl or has it been altered in any way?  The more simple the food, and freshly cooked, the better it is for you.  

Avoid too much bread and other yeast containing foods (such as beer) as these aggravate the bloating.  

Eat as much raw fruit (how about Blueberries, Apples, Satsumas etc) and veg (coleslaw, Brocolli, Green Beans perhaps) as you can to help with the constipation.  Chew on dried fruits, nuts and seeds instead of sweets or cigarettes. Drink plenty of fresh water or herbal teas.  

You can have small amounts of carbohydrate foods but the emphasis is on small!  Try occasionally to replace pasta with courgetti, potato with mashed carrots & sweet potato, bread with a wrap, rice with a rice & quinoa mix, cake with Allbran & dried fruit Loaf.

I write this as a former bread and chocolate addict, and can vouch for the benefits of eating the healthier alternatives.  Let us know how you get on?

Hi, healthunlocked.com/user/xna..., What a great question.  I would eat more!  Initially just add an extra vegetable to every plate of savoury food.  If it is cereal for breakfast, add a fruit.  If you don't fancy switching to a lower fat milk, consider switching to plain yogurt with your cereal.  I use between 75g-150g.  The Greek ones are lovely and creamy, even the 0% fat ones.  Make some vegetable soups and add them as the starter to your lunch and your dinner.  Salad makes another good starter.  Don't forget to add your extra vegetable to your main course.  You don't need to stand and prepare lots, you can use frozen, canned and pickled ones as well as fresh ones.  Have a pudding with lunch and dinner but make it a fruit based one, plus some more low fat dairy.  So perhaps a sugar free jelly with some fruit canned in juice, drained, topped with a little yogurt, or half a can of apple (just canned with acetic acid) microwaved, sprinkled with cinnamon and a carton of low fat custard.  I'm sure you get the ideas and will soon be trying your own variations.  As you find this way of eating does fill you up, you can start tweaking the protein and the fats on your plate.  You might want to start by going up market, ie buying the lower fat, and usually more expensive cuts, but make your portion smaller so that you have improved the quality of your intake but the cost should be stable.  We find that a 100g of protein is quite satisfactory alongside a plate full of veg.  Fish is another brilliant option.  Most frozen fish dishes are relatively low in fat as it prolongs their shelf life!  So try some of those.  Iceland often has special offers.  If you need some easy soup recipes, have a look at the recipes on here or ask everyone for their favourites.  I am lazy about this, so often use canned or frozen veg alongside my stock cubes for a quick fix.  Hope you are soon having some interesting food adventures and feeling better about your meals.

Wow, so you know what the problem is..your diet is crap...I love it. lol  i had to change my diet because I have leukemia.. So to start with, no proccessed foods. Put honey where your surgar is now, air popcorn instead of junk food. i went natural  raw milk, cheese, eggs. I think god makes the food better than man...lol Dark chocolate pomegranate, or blueberries when I just got to have a little something sweet. I make my own bread every two weeks, so I don't over eat it, I love bread more than sweets. I learned to make my own pasta, so I control whats in it.. I changed to Himalaya salt..its good for you, wont raise blood presure and has 84 minerals your body needs. I drink ginger tea, to fight cancer,but it is great for all types of things including digestion. I also put coconut oil (4 teas per day) in my food. Oatmeal, on toast or just a spoonful in my  mouth..takes some getting use to.lol  I didn't eat veg my whole life..but now I find the taste is soo good after I stopped eatting the "crap prossed food"  Takes a little planning but if you roast them in the oven, you can do other things while they cook. Also it is cheeper if you go to a farmers market, freasher too.

Hi,

Try cutting out anything with chemicals, e numbers. or anything with a weird name that you don't recognise as a real food.

I eat a clean diet, which means avoiding processed foods, & avoid things containing sunflower oil or margarine which is over processed & inflammatory.

I have jars of nuts & dried fruit, & fresh fruit on my kitchen table, so they're the easiest & most obvious things to eat when I want a snack.

I am a fan of probiotics, & eat kefir every day rather than supplements. It's helped balance my digestion, & improves nutrient absorption.
