I love my food so like selecting my own and am open minded when I go shopping for fruits and veg so don't go in for home deliveries except milk and I'm really pleased that I get fresh local organic whole milk delivered and orange juice in bottles.

Also supporting my local independent shops is important to me as I'm supporting my own community which supporting me and feel part of the community because of this.

like you i prefer to actually go to a shop and mooch around for what i want, but due to being housebound because of breaking my shoulder and arm,i cannot drive at the mo and dont want to bother people, and so in desperation i looked for delivery, and the only people who could deliver in a short time was Iceland, some things are very good but some things not nice at all,so its all trial and error, but good thing was i ordered late ish one evening with delivery next morning.

Hey poor you and I'm so sorry as it sounds really painful and uncomfortable, so how you feel is understandable.

I imagine that home shopping is very difficult and I don't envy you this so hope that you get better offers until you can shop again.

You take care of your self now and remember your shoulder and arm are already healing.

Same here. I prefer to shop for my fresh fruits and veggies. I also make a salad for my parrot, cockatiels and myself. I prefer to make the salad only once a week, so I shop for the freshest veggies and 1 fruit for the salad.Other than that, I cannot imagine trusting anyone else to shop for breads, meats and fish.

I just detest all the plastic packaging in supermarkets so try to buy from local shops and markets where possible. Growing our produce is best of course and tastes much better. Hubby harvested peas and beans yesterday for freezer but there is more to come. Tomatoes are finally starting to ripen.

Forgot to say air miles also.

I have ticked every single box and my comment here is freshness of food, nice crisp greens and fresh eggs, nothing wrapped in plastic.

I'm gradually finding products that are packed in cardboard, glass and tin cans which are all recycleable rather than plastics. I'm also trying to find more fruit and veg loose but it's very hard to find here, there is only 1 real greengrocers left in town. When I can I shop at a local farm shop for produce and take my own reusable bags. I'm also very happy that the 2 catalogues I use have also switched to biodegradable bags and most of the places I buy from online pack in cardboard boxes with paper or biodegradable plant based noodles instead of bubble wrap. I also found a cat food that comes in tetra packs as my cats won't eat food from cans. Their dry food comes in paper sacs. Not plastic free yet but slowly getting there. I'm now only putting out 1 half bag of plastics a month for recycling and 1 black trash bag every 2 weeks. All the bin bags I now use are also biodegradable. Either way I go for minimal packaging as much as possible. My town is one of the best for kirbside recycling services.

I selected locally produced and other. My other is keeping shopping trips to a minimum. I don’t find home delivery that helpful as there are often things missing so I have to go to the shop anyway. I pick one supermarket and plan a weeks worth of shopping at one go. I’m still trying to limit mixing with a lot of people in indoor spaces especially where mask wearing is less. I’m well protected by the Covid vaccine but I work with clinically extremely vulnerable people. I do also like to visit the local farm shop every couple of weeks to stock up on local produce.

I don’t have a vehicle and there’s only one shop, which doesn’t do home delivery. There’s a market garden which also sells its produce in the shop. Their produce is organic and either sold loose or in eco friendly packaging. I also chose other because I’m a vegetarian (was a vegan, most days I still eat a totally plant based diet) so when I’m buying food I always check that it’s suitable for vegetarians.

I am extremely fortunate to be able to grow a lot of fresh food and to have a local organic deliverer who is committed to no plastic. The compromises I have to make are mostly with primary proteins, beef is not a problem as we produce organic grass fed here but I like chicken and the best available around here are not organic. My layers are on holiday so not enough home produced eggs at the moment. Fish comes from the supermarket, mackerel fillets are a real treat.

We eat vegetarian and vegan main meals at least twice a week.

Cost is always a consideration, less beer and wine in the trolley makes a huge difference!

I can’t actually go shopping without my mobility scooter which I hate using, so my shopping is delivered. I will not buy chicken or sausages or eggs it’s not free range. I do go to my local farmers market where I buy locally grown vegetables and fruit that are in season. I do buy grapes though which obviously are flown in. A girl has to have one indulgence

in reply to Htims46

Hey good for you Htims46 as grapes are a fantastic source of vitamins and minerals and are delicious. 🍇 😊

Mornin’. My ability to shop is limited by time. Can’t stay on my feet for long so on my good days to shop include going to a big box store first because of the quality and cost of everything. Then on the way home, swing by another store to pick up the odds and ends I can’t get at my first stop. Normally, though, I would go to the closest grocer for convenience, even though it is a bit pricier. My town used to have a nice vegetable stand, but it was squeezed out by Walmart across the street from it.End of that era. 🙁 I found another grocer across town that I would like to frequent more often. The prices are great, although selection is limited. The best part is the store has a nostalgic atmosphere and I can beebop to the fifties music they play while I shop. The other comments here has gotten me thinking to get more serious on weeding out plastics from shopping. Thanks, everyone. 😁

I’ve been using online deliveries for many years due to spinal issues. First Iceland via the telephone, then Waitrose who at that time were the only supermarkets to deliver to our area. And in the last few years Ocado due their quick easy to use website. Also do a small top up shop once a week at an M&S food store with parking spaces near the door. often getting a few reduced fresh bargains. Ps. & Checking for low salt and sugar online before ordering.

I try to avoid supermarkets completely and I favour using our local retailers. We have 3 award winning butchers, a craft bakery. Until last week we didn't have a fruit/veggie shop but I used the newly opened on yesterday. Their fruit and greens are far superior to what the supermarkets on sale. It is high time that we did pay attention to things like packaging and air miles. For saladings , I've started growing my own in troughs. Really easy option with no air mile, sprays or packaging!

Must admit to cost but hopefully like many others subject to a minimum standard with quality.

I live with and look after my housebound 95 year old mother who has dementia and my husband who has advanced Parkinson's Disease, so home delivery is essential for us. We're lucky to have lots of choice with supermarkets that deliver, but the most important consideration for me when choosing which one to shop with is which one has the most vegan / vegetarian and organic options.

in reply to HealthSeeker7

Hey you’ve got your hands full here HealthSeeker7 but you’re making great food choices so good for you.

I admire how you’ve taken this on yourself. And I hope that you get plenty of support for you as well.

So well done for eating so well it will give you strength 😊

Thank you Jerry. I learned much from my mother who became a vegetarian (egg-free) in 1960 when I was only 9. I followed her wise example a few years later. Now my children and grandchildren are life-long vegetarians. We owe my sweet gentle mother so much. My husband was vegetarian when I met him, but is now vegan because dairy interferes with the absorption of his PD medication. We are all mainly vegan now, and despite the dementia and PD, we are all otherwise in very good health.

I buy food that 'Looks Wholesome', rather than just Fresh- though that IS clearly important too!

Currently I'm making Smoothies, I have 'Posted' regarding this, using Cherry Plums from our Tree (technically next door's tree actually).

Happy Days

This one is quite difficult, as there are a few factors in our food shop.

I travel slightly further afield to a supermarket we find more coeliac friendly, so distance takes a lower priority.

We also currently get a veg box delivered, which provides entirely locally grown (therefore seasonal) organic, plastic free produce, but I do sometimes skip a week because it can be a bit samey (e.g. I've received 2 bunches of spring onions per week for the last 6 weeks).

With some foods, I try to pick UK/Scottish produce if available, because it has lower food miles, and I've reduced the amount of foods like avocado and almonds that I buy, as I'm conscious of their food miles.

I like to know that foods have been ethically produced. I am not a fan of genetic moderation, termination technology or irradiation. I'm no longer a vegetarian, but need to know that my eggs are truly free range and that the animals who were slaughtered for my consumption have led as comfortable a life as possible. I also prefer to eat seasonally, not so much because of consideration of air miles etc., but because fruit and veg hurriedly grown and picked, transported and sold at too early a stage are underripe and tasteless.

Fresh produce that lasts. Especially leafy greens. I do my primary shopping once a week. It is just me. Buying from a supermarket with veggies that don’t last is a waste and expensive. I don’t mind paying more. It means I’m less likely to get delivery when I’m low on fresh food. Markets are unfortunately not everyday and usually a drive. I grew up near a farm. Just don’t have much of that here. A subscription box is never small enough for one either. I know too much science to buy into anti gmo stuff. I’m not so sure organic is really a good idea either.

Luckily for me I live close to asda and sainsburys so I always walk there and back except in the winter on the way back and I know that they are great in prices as I mostly stick to supermaket brands with great costs and I only buy locally produced foods there from the u.k. Plus they have a great range of organic foods.

Another great survey to get everyone talking and communicating with each other.

in reply to Lotus-Blossom

Hey thats great Lotus-Blossom as walking to the shops is perfect as a good selection of organic and I'm so glad that you like the polls as we do too. 😊
