Interesting seeing how many are allergic to dairy! Wheat, protein and seafood joins my list.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to lgd333

I'm intolerant myself, but it seems to be a very common one!

Did you mean wheat protein, or is protein a separate intolerance? That would be a really hard one.

lgd333 profile image
lgd333 in reply to Cooper27

Hi, wheat and protein separate... I am allergic to yoghurt and more.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to lgd333

That must be a really tough one to deal with :(

Allergies are in the genes of our family, so not just foods but color, fragrance, perfumes, pet hair, shampoo, dishwashing liquid and so much more. It's a constant problem but using hypoallergenic soaps, creams etc

Same here. I have a filter on my shower as well because my skin reacts to the chlorine in the water. God I hate allergies.

I have to take an antihistamine tablet daily to control mine.

lawli56 profile image
lawli56 in reply to lgd333

I take that as well but I still get skin rashes if I expose my skin to it.

Understood so well.

In addition to caffeine, gluten and lactose, I am intolerant of cornstarch, maize (sweetcorn), coconut and sesame. I have no idea why. It makes for a very restricted diet, though I try to tell myself it is not a boring one. I need to stay as close to a natural diet as possible.

You must have a hard time eating anywhere! I'm glad you manage to keep it interesting :)

My parents took my wife and I out for a meal last week.

Jacqui, as usual, scoured the menu for me. "Look!" she squealed when she found something. "You can have the Dover sole. That's not too bad, is it?"

Never has eating out felt so close to rock bottom.

My partner has coeliac disease, and I'm gluten intolerant, so I can sympathise with the feeling :D but at least it's a meal you didn't have to cook for yourself :)

I was over the moon when I found a restaurant in town that had vegan curries on the menu that I could eat. 😀

Corn was my first one and fructose

Something in sweet and sour sauce upsets my gall bladder and yer I can eat garlic, chilli and other spices!

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Becksagogo

Interesting. If it's from a chinese takeaway, I wonder if it's MSG? That's a pretty common one to be intolerant to. Sweet and Sour sauce also tends to have pineapple juice in it. The recipe is basically ketchup, vinegar, pineapple juice, sugar and soya sauce.

Becksagogo profile image
Becksagogo in reply to Cooper27

They were from 2 Thai Restaurants. I know that for my heart medication I shouldn't have grapefruit juice. I hope pineapple juice isn't off the menu too!

The usual suspects for me include:

*Gluten intolerance

*Intolerant to chicken eggs but I can eat duck eggs

*Intolerant to cow dairy but fine with goat.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Imaaan

We've similar intolerances! It's a pain to juggle isn't it?

Imaaan profile image
Imaaan in reply to Cooper27

Indeed it is, especially since I've developed them later in life.

Great poll Cooper, yes I'm intolerant to Gluten and Dairy but also now have to follow fodmap - Its getting hard to find something I can eat, especially being vegan as well

🙃

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Kitten-whiskers

What a nightmare! I hope you can ease off the FODMAP diet soon, it must be really tiring to juggle!

Sadly it doesn't Look that way, but thankfully There is a product called intesticare that's brilliant at calming things down

😁

Cooper27 profile image

I hope it helps :) I actually just ordered a food marble to see if it's any use for food intolerances. I can let you know if it's any good?

How Interesting! Yes please - that would be great. The Intesticare works so well for me 😁

Intolerance to caffeine too.

Mine is Dairy/lactose but didn't start until I was in my mid-40s.

J cant eat nightshades or my fingers swell up and are painful and have to avoid onions and leeks as they set off chronic rhinitis. But I avoid gluten cow dairy and soy for safety!!

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to topaz1

Nightshades must be tough to avoid? Do you find it easy enough to manage without?

topaz1 profile image
topaz1 in reply to Cooper27

I miss tomatoes! Use celery instead of onions and have found a homemade spice mix instead of curry powder, so not too bad.

It would be interesting to have an option for None to see those not affected too.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to SquirrelNutkin

Yes, unfortunately I removed it from the list when re-ordering the options and it's too late to add back in!

None, thankfully 🤓

I'm lactose intolerant but thankfully only to cows milk so I count myself very fortunate that I can find alternatives quite easily.

Believe it or not. I have an allergy to Cilantro. In it's basic form , that being the raw green leaf and stem I experience a reaction similar to Pollen sensitivity. ie: sneezing, runny nose, watering eyes. Basically a sudden onset of a head cold.Oddly enough I have no problems with the ground or whole seed Corriander, or the powder form Cumin...go figure

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to

Ah, not cilantro! It's sprinkled on everything!

in reply to Cooper27

Yes it is indeed! So much so in California, I've dubbed it The State Plant.Sure puts a kink in eating at Mexican and Indian restaurants..😝

Oh I’d forgotten coriander - tastes like soap and makes my eyes itch

in reply to jd65

Right! I forgot to mention those effects as well. You'd be surprised at the raised eyebrows and disbelief I get from folks when I tell them about my allergic reaction..

springcross profile image
springcross

I forgot to say that if I eat raw onions or spring onions, I get silent reflux and that didn't start until I was in my 50s.

lawli56 profile image
lawli56

My other is specifically wheat not gluten per se. I can eat other grains containing gluten but because wheat gluten is much tougher than the gluten in other foods my guts react badly to it. I'm both lactose intolerant as I don't produce the enzyme lactase and have a mild allergy to milk as my lifelong eczema can attest to so I use goat dairy products or plant based "milks". I have the atopic gene so I also get asthma and hayfever as well as do most of my immediate family.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to lawli56

I don't think it's uncommon to just be wheat sensitive :) Wheat is a far harsher grain for those with sensitive digestive systems.

lawli56 profile image
lawli56 in reply to Cooper27

Yeah I had a gastric bypass 12 years ago and my wheat & lactose intolerance started after that. I'm also intolerant of sugar and fat I get "dumping sydrome" so I'm on a low fat and sugar diet. Not that I mind since just looking at devils cake makes me want to heave. Now a nice juicy apple on the other hand... My body knows what it doesn't like.

I had an intolerance to lamb after I’d been on holiday in the Maldives. Every time I ate lamb it made me sick. I left it alone for a year and thankfully I was fine after that. Thank goodness as lamb is one of my favourite meats!

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to HardleyHare

This one is a really common one for some reason! I don't know if it's a fat thing or something else 🤔

I'm not allergic to any food but I do have an intolerance to decorative but small portions at inflated prices 🤣 Seriously though, I once had to take my son to A&E when his face swelled up and eyes were streaming after he'd eaten a new chocolate bar that he didn't realise contained peanuts. When I said I knew he had a peanut allergy, the Dr said it was an "intolerance" because if he had an allergy he could possibly have died after consuming that amount. We think his intolerance stems from a prescription bath oil, used when he was a baby, for eczema, which at that time contained peanut oil which would have penetrated the inflamed skin. But I believe the base oil for the product has now been changed.

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply to PandQs

I am not medically qualified, but that doctor was wrong! Swelling and eyes streaming are an allergic reaction. It's your immune system treating the substance as if it was an infection, and swelling and eyes watering are signs of the immune system being engaged.

And (sorry to say so) but yes, your son could have died. If the swelling was in his throat and not his face, he might have suffocated before your got him help.

That doctor is an idiot.

Intolerance/sensitivity is a digestive system issue, not immune system problem. Your son has an allergy.

Glad he survived and presumably is well now.

(I have had lifelong allergies, but never life threatening)

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to PandQs

Oh that must have been scary for your son! I'm glad it was "just" an intolerance!

I have had cheese intolerance all my life, the smell makes me queasy, and if I eat any by accident (if its added without my knowing) I will immediately start throwing up and be ill for quite a while afterwards.

Soy and Wheat !!

Fran182716 profile image

I developed IBS in my 40s, though luckily for me wheat and dairy were never a problem. In the last couple of years I have been able to reintroduce small portions of alliums and brassicas if they are well cooked, but I still can’t eat legumes except a small amount of lentils or chickpeas. Beans of any kind are a complete no unfortunately.

Quorn gives me stomach cramps . Can’t eat fish - I have tried but it makes me sick.

Peanuts, gluten. Tend to avoid eggs especially scrambled, omelette & boiled. Occasionally can tolerate a cup of cocoa made with milk or half milk and soya milk. Ok with small amounts of cheese.

My list is as long as your arm so I won't list them.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to ThyroidThora

Sorry to hear that :(

This is a great poll and I’m a coeliac so I’m gluten free as you know.

It’s really interesting how many are dairy intolerant as I didn’t expect that.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to

I'm surprised it's near a tie with gluten!

lawli56 profile image
lawli56 in reply to

Intolerance to cows milk is usually down to lack of the enzyme lactase which converts lactose it to a simple sugar that we can digest. As we get older we naturally produce less of it. It's produced in the lining of the stomach along with intrinsic factor which you need to absorb vit B12. Needless to say since I only have a pouch and not a full size stomach I'm also deficient in that so have B12 injections every 12 weeks.
