I must admit that sometimes I have a fresh / frozen tuna steak with a side salad. Very tasty. Chris

Like the username! How many bunnies do you have?

Ilovebunnies profile image

I don't have any anymore, once my allergies kicked in anything with fur started me wheezing big time & then triggering an asthma attack . Still miss my bunny snuggles.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Ilovebunnies

That's a shame :( I'll hope it's an allergy you might one day grow out of, so you can enjoy bunny snuggles some day!

Somehow don't think it likely to happen at my age - I'm 67 now & had this asthma allergies for most of my life . My friends daughter & son-in-law keep rabbits & I have a look when they have had babies but can't get too close or I scare the humans with my breathing. Chris

Can’t stand Tuna, plus they also catch dolphins in their tuna nets, terrible

Pole and line caught is available.

I don’t eat it either but buy it for my sons, some companies don’t use the nets which catch dolphins which is why I stick to the ones I know are more ethical.

Hi,

That is what I would do if I liked it, which I don’t. All food should be ethical, whether it be meat, fish or poultry. Unfortunately that is not the case.

Matt2584 profile image

Definitely with you on that one. All food should be ethically sourced.

If a company finds how to gather enormous amounts of something, you’ll usually find that it is that act that is harming something else. And it’s all in the sake of money why it is done in the first place!

I mostly buy in spring water, but sometimes we buy flavoured (in lemon or lime oil) or fresh :)

I also love fresh tuna steak pan fried 😋 but most of the time, it’s tinned tuna (in brine) made into tuna mayo and served with a mixed salad.

Used to buy tuna in spring water for our American Bulldog. I would occasionally pinch a tin for a salad, mixed with may and sweetcorn, it was quite tasty. Buying for us humans we always have fresh from our fishmonger. Tastes completely different. Very yummy.

I buy tuna in sunflower oil as I find the spring water and brine too dry and end up using mayo to compensate!!!! 😂

I haven’t bought any for ages, but when I do, I buy Waitrose own brand in spring water. And I’ve just put it on my online order. So thank you for the mention of it

Other.: i loath tuna.

I like to eat fresh tuna steaks as well, but not very often. Mostly it's in spring water, both for me and the cats, although I would give the cats tuna in brine if there was nothing else because they love it anyway. (Yes, it is true what they, it's a cat's life in my house, so make sure if you're coming back as a cat, that you come back as one of mine, LOL)

There is also the tuna they've just started to sell that is completely drained already, and sometimes when I get tuna water all over my hands and can't shake the smell, I wonder if it's worth the extra money to buy that.

Final thought on this subject, I thought you were going to ask us whether we buy it only if it's been "pole and line" caught or whether we buy "yellow fin tuna/blue fin tuna" - one of which has a lower mercury content than the other. I am vague about this because I honestly can't remember. I know we're meant to buy pole and line caught tuna because using nets to catch tuna often results in the unwanted catching of dolphins, which is awful. I would welcome correction or information if someone reading this knows better or remembers!

I find the ready drained stuff still has a little excess liquid that you need to deal with. It's handy for on the go, because it's quicker to drain, even if it shouldn't need draining, but it's not a miracle solution :)

in reply to Cooper27

Thank you for that information, Coop! I thought there might be some liquid, because it might have come out of the tuna itself, if you see what I mean. And I'm sorry, they haven't only "just" started selling it, it's been a few years. I guess I am revealing my age, LOL! But that was useful info, always appreciated.

They still use a little brine/sunflower oil in the tins, but I think it's the bare minimum.

I do have fresh as often as I see it. I like the John West Tuna To Go as it's only about 200 calories a portion, mostly I make up my own Tuna mayo with onion and sweetcorn and a batch lasts me and my hubby a few days.

Don't like tinned tuna, to me smells like cat food. Buy fresh when we are abroad but here it is never really nice.

We enjoy it in sunflower or olive oil; have tried it in brine, but 'no thanks'. Its all a matter of preference, but an interesting poll seeing the results! Thank you.

Tuna is healthy and is certainly and bad for animals how do you think our four legged friends started out. Not on the trash food they are fed in most cases my dog is on a keto diet he is 80lbs sois muscles eats meat. You could do some research and find this information out. I respect that do do not care to eat animal food but did not say it is soly was. We eat high grade fresh or flash frozen tuna from our fish monger!

Thanks for replying, but actually I've been doing a lot of research, for many years, and the one doctor I've come to trust the most is Michael Greger M.D. FACLM (Fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine) - he has published many videos about the ravages of animal food consumption; I found a few in which he mentions tuna (if you are interested there are more) : nutritionfacts.org/video/fl... nutritionfacts.org/video/th... nutritionfacts.org/2018/02/... nutritionfacts.org/video/ef... Look, I know that dogs eat meat and cats love tuna, but they do not indulge in intensive animal farming (believed to be the primary cause of the covid pandemics), nor do they get their fish through destructive fishing... I hope you take the time to look up some of the videos in nutritionfacts.org ....

We buy our animal both dog and cat or I freshly cook myself through a Grass fed or poultry farms designed by strict laws govenrting the feeding and food consumption thes animals have. They are free range grass fed soley no antibotics drug free. The land is pesticide free they are slaghter humanely. Raised on small family farms with frequent visit by agents to inspect. I well lessoned in the poor animal science of eating and dog food, that's why Ink I spoke so boldly. Forgive me I'm researched as you seem I'm well familiar with Greger myself. He feels a sole tuna diet or seafood is harmful not in moderation. My cat never recieves it besides as a treat. Harmful to the kidney system. Dogs fair better. Do not start me on farming of animals mostly by products- waste of time buying commerical dog food you are killing your dog. Food need to be at least grain free and meat based if you can not totally go ro a pure meat diet.

Thanks for your info... I see you are well aware of the issues at stake and take pains to do as little harm as possible, and I do realize you have to feed your dog, so... Amen to that and bye for now

Tuna is probably healthy... if it is organic... chances are, most of the tuna you purchase these days isn’t organic, even if line caught etc.

How can Tuna be healthy if it’s been swimming around in radiation?

You are aware of the Fukushima radiation leak, right?

I never eat tinned tuna, it is always hard, dry, and lumpy, requiring mayonnaise I would imagine adding to the calorie count.

Have you tried tuna mixed with hummus instead of mayonnaise?😀👍🌈

Lightly cooked fish is my favourite dish, why add those calories, but you have to with tinned tuna to make it palatable, but thank you.

I can only stomach the tuna in brine, as I cannot eat the ones in oil, too strong. Fresh is delicious but too expensive.

Activity2004 profile image

I eat tuna both fresh and from a can. I mix hummus and tuna together instead of mayonnaise unless I have to go and buy/cook homemade hummus here and there.

Wonderful poll!😀👍🌈

Don’t buy tuna at all.

It tastes ok but I don’t buy it.

Now, remember years ago when Japan experienced that Tsunami that busted the Fukushima nuclear plant? Well there is gallons of radiation leaking into the ocean and all tuna, or most, is doused in radiation... according to Mike Adams anyhow.

So that’s the main reason why I don’t touch tuna.

And even if the Fukushima thing isn’t true, I still wouldn’t bother eating it anyway.it’s not something I love and must have.

sorry this is late, you know me :: I have tried the tuna in all flavors and marinades and find the best is the one is in sunflower oil, (Dolphin friendly) the others somehow taste very bland and I can add home made mayonnaise and my own dressings into it, I do now and again purchase fresh tuna when I go to Bury market or other fish markets I can wrap them individually and get out what I need and these do keep for a week or so, gently simmered for a few minutes, not to much salt as they are salty anyway
