Tomatoes are so versatile they are great in a salad or fab as a base for a sauce either in Bolognese or in a curry or stew.

Don't know what I'd do without tomatoes I add a tin to most things I cook.

And have cherry tomatoes as a snack sometimes too.

I know this is controversial but I have no favourite vegetable because I hate them all, only eat them because you’re supposed to. If I absolutely have to choose the one I dislike least it would be mushrooms, preferably roast.

P.S. This does not, of course, mean I don’t eat veg or cook them for the family, it just means I don’t enjoy them 😏

I think you made a lovely Dutch split pea soup - I've still not tried it, but I hope to at some point. I hope you're the right person, I'm going from memory. I should check - otherwise you'll wonder what I'm referring to...

You remember right, I do make the split pea soup and must admit I actually enjoy it myself as well. Thanks for reminding me! I suppose when I think of vegetables it’s the undisguised ones, I’m all right when I can’t see what they are, pretty childish I suppose 😉.

I hope you’ll try it some time and let me know what you think. Although in Holland we usually eat it in the winter (especially after ice skating outdoors, often with smoked sausage added), there’s no reason why you can’t try it any time of the year.

Nice of you to remember 😊

To be honest I like all vegetables. Except for chicory, I hate that. 😊

Provided they are home grown runner beans ... but I don't know anyone who grows them anymore. Very sad. Xxx

in reply to Flossie1920

Hi flossie, I still grow my own runners beans cannot stand the French ones and I make sure I freeze at least 1 bag as I have them on Christmas Day, old family tradition.

Flossie1920 profile image
Flossie1920 in reply to

I don't know the first thing about growing veg (or anything else for that matter) and now have a bad back so useless altogether. My neighbour used to grow runners and often gave me some which I loved but even he is too old now - you certainly have the right idea about freezing though that's exactly what I would do if I grew them. What I can't understand is why do "shop" bought new season look so good but taste so bad! Keep us the good work and enjoy the fruits of your labour. xx

in reply to Flossie1920

Hi I'm in a wheelchair and my partner makes raised beds for me he loves the fresh veg to much for me to stop.

The taste is sooo different in supermarket veg, personally I really think they blast freeze them as soon as a crop is picked so they don't lose any it also keeps them the vivid green that makes them look fresh but the taste will go off in the freezin/defrosting and that is what ruins the taste, to keep the flavour in beans and nearly all veg they really have to be blanched first then you can freeze them as much as you like and they will taste as good as the day they were picked, also

you don't get that lovely "snap" when you top and tail them, they just bend or come of stringy yuck,

I really can't see any supermarket employing people to blanch the veg before packaging. Lol

I know it's being pedantic, but are tomatoes not technically a fruit?

Sweet capsicum and snow peas and just had a quick look to make sure it is a vegetable - gold sweet potato - prefer it to the purple variety.

Nothing on your list I wouldnt eat .

Other is spinach, as a salad, steamed with melted mozzarella, inside an omelette, as a veg with meat - any way at all !

Broad beans from my garden. Most bought broad beans are picked too late, they are best picked young and sweet, and the day I have to stop growing them is likely to be the day I decide that life is just about at its End!

Tibblington profile image
Tibblington in reply to ClareCrip

Yes, and furthermore when broad beans are young you can eat the skins as well. Take the young tender ones, scrape off the fluff from inside, chop them up and cook them at the same time as the beans, they're great.

What's wrong with good old cabbage especially the young ones? By the way, tomatoes are not vegetables but fruit and mushrooms are a fungus. Sorry! !

You're 100% right but they are eaten as veggies. 😊

I've chosen asparagus because it's special and still seasonal (if, like me, you stick to the English variety and ignore all the imported stuff). However I love all veg and my second favourite would probably be leeks.

Dear Jerry,

Not being Critical...but these 'Single Choice' Polls don't really say a lot. I like a lot of veg, my second choice is Mushroom, by the way. Least favourite, not asked for I know, probably Broccoli, followed by Cauliflower.

Once again 'Interesting' but maybe more 'Choice(s)' next time?

AndrewT

in reply to AndrewT

Hi Andrew, with the polls we have 8 choices with single or multiple choices so we are restricted to 7 choices + other.

I saw a poll using 10 veg which I used but had to join Brassica’s so I am going to compare the results of our poll on HE with the one I saw.

I did it because it said how tomatoes were no longer the UK’s favourite veg and our poll reflects this...so a follow up post with stars will follow.

I appreciate feedback and don’t have a problem with positive critique.

Jerry.

Thanks Jerry for your kind “Vegetable patch of a wonderful plus of foods good nourishment and just Sound Tips And Good Poll!

Ive suddenly remembered all this ,for me to have as an array of things to prepare foods wise!🥗 x

I know tomatoes are not technically a vegetable but I use them as one, and while it’s hard to pick just one tomatoes are definitely the “veg” I would miss most as I have them in most meals fresh or cooked.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Fran182716

Someone once told me there's a term called "fruiting vegetable", which they use to describe aubergines, cucumbers, courgettes etc. I'm conflicted with tomatoes, suppose they could come under that umbrella though!

Speaking of tinned tomatoes, I visited a tomato canning plant in Italy two years ago as part of my job. They spend ten months per year making 330 million empty tin cans, then July and August canning the tomatoes and sending them to all corners of the world. What a great experience to walk around that factory. Never seen a building so big.

in reply to Mercmancouchto5k

This sounds fascinating 330 million cans of tomatoes with 400g per tin...a mind boggling amount of tomatoes. 🍅 🍅 🍅

Mercmancouchto5k profile image
Mercmancouchto5k in reply to

I was over awed. I was inspecting a new installation of wireless network access points - a lot of them - on moveable gantries. When the shelves are full of tins, no wireless signals! Another job for the robots - moving tins around with forklifts

in reply to Mercmancouchto5k

It sounds a memorable and fascinating experience to me as we take so many things for granted and things like this bring home the scale of global companies.
