It’s okay!😀 It’s good to have different types of the same food as to what you like to eat/drink. I picked lentil soup since I have it with hummus. I like butternut squash and potato with cheese when I eat out.😀

Cullen skink is never wrong.

Hi Jerry,

Another very good poll.

I've gone for Lentil but also like Butternut Squash.

Can't remember what it's called except Sainsbury do a really good fresh one. Has mixed veg, tomatoes sauce, herbs with hardly any garlic as don't like to smell of it, then I think it has barely and a little pasta....it's driving me bonkers so need help please. No doubt I will remember at a ridiculous time in the morning. Sure it starts with an M ?????? Xx

I like all soups. But winter soup for me is thick pea soup, with potato and leek and ham.

I'm afraid mine is just carrots, leeks and potatoes in clear liquid. Has anyone got any ideas on how I can improve this? My only equipment is a microwave.

alchemilla12 profile image
alchemilla12 in reply to Greyone

can you not get one of those hand held stick blenders ?

Greyone profile image
Greyone in reply to alchemilla12

Noticed some cheap ones in Wilko this morning. Would they turn it to a funny kinda mud?

alchemilla12 profile image
alchemilla12 in reply to Greyone

well not really -thats how I make most of my soups. You can always leave some cooked vegetable pieces out and then add them back to give some more texture but generally stick blenders work well to blend / puree things.( You need to cook your veggies first obviously and then blend liquid and veg together :) )

Gotcha. Does not sound too hard, must give it a go next weekend.

Maybe tomato and chorizo. I diced onion, celery, carrot, courgette and mushrooms, added some ready diced chorizo (you can buy frozen stuff or fresh stuff), then poured in a carton of passata, mixed herbs, and a bit of stock and cooked til everything was soft. I did this in a slow cooker, but think it could work in a microwave.

I think it would work without the chorizo if you're veggie! I'd maybe add some chilli oil or smoked paprika for a slight edge if you do.

Certainly not. I'm a complete carnivore and chorizo has a nice meaty, fatty, salty taste to it. But I think I'll have to have a go at that all in stages. Thx for the recipe.

Invest in a manual potato masher perhaps.

You could add red lentils.

I don’t grow butternut squash, but I do grow a number of other squashes, my favourite soups are therefore either squash and red pepper soup, or spicy squash soup.

I made butternut and coconut soup the other day. Butternut squash, onion, ginger, a tin of coconut milk and some chilli. Absolutely delish. I also make butternut and sweet potato soup, London fog (a thick pea and ham soup) and carrot and coriander soup. I also make cauliflower cheese soup.

I chose other as there are too many good ones to have a favourite! I rarely stick to a recipe, though most have sweet potato, lentils, or some sort of squash included as I like thick soups that are more like a stew. My most recent soup is the sweet potato cauliflower and coconut I posted photos of a couple of days ago. If I'm short of time I keep a couple of cans of Amys brand tomato or lentil soup as a back up but I do enjoy making my own. I might try looking up some recipes as I'd like to experiment a bit more with different herbs and spices.

I chose butternut squash, but have a few I really like:

Leek and sweet potato, spicy carrot and coconut, chicken and butternut squash, butternut squash and apple, tomato and chorizo, chicken zoodle, carrot and ginger...

All nice but I love Minestrone - Nigella Lawson's recipe from How To Eat. With no tomato! Onions, carrots, celery, potato, green beans, cabbage, courgette, cannellini beans, pasta and plenty of parmesan.

I have several favourite Winter soups but I picked Mushroom because it is so versatile and easy to make. Once made, I can use it as a substitute gravy, add it to a casserole or use it as a sauce. In the winter, I add a small potato to the soup, & sometimes a desert spoon of sherry if available ( tip from recipe book which works very well with this soup 🥣)
