I don't tend to set new year's resolutions, because I know they don't tend to stick.

I guess the one thing you could consider a resolution, was to do 10 mins of housework every day, to save time on the weekends. I've only missed 1 day due to a bad headache, so all seems good!

I did struggle to get back to a healthy eating regimen after Christmas though, I kept delaying "til tomorrow". I've been back to my sugar free, dairy free, soya free and gluten free existence for 3 days :)

All going well Jerry, I haven't caved in to temptation yet and have done much better in almost all the tasks I set myself : >

Will do Leah : >

I don’t make resolutions as such, but I do commit to getting rid of the Christmas pounds in January every year. I always manage it by Spring! :)

I put other as I had an appointment with the dietician on the 10th of January as I am type 2 diabetic and also have autoimmune hepatitis. The two diets are not completely compatible so I wanted to see an expert. Unfortunately they cancelled the appointment and I'm not seeing her until 31st January now. It's also my birthday tomorrow and my son took us out for dinner yesterday, we'll have lunch out tomorrow, my daughter's are taking me out on Saturday and we're having lunch with friends on Sunday πŸ˜‚ so it doesn't seem the right time at the moment. I'll start it when I see the dietician (I'll probably be half a stone heavier by then)

but you can still make healthy choices even though you are eating out a lot !

I don't make new year resolutions because they are always broken which leads me to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety and depression. Instead I have ongoing goals intended to gradually deal with my eating disorder, SAD and anxiety and depression and help me to improve my physical health through a healthier lifestyle. I take a holistic approach since they are all so inter-dependent and so far it seems to be working albeit slowly.

I joined Slimming World, have been to 2 meetings so far, have lost 2 pounds and I'm following the rules enthusiastically. I've also done quite a bit of de-cluttering and started walking more. And mustn't forget I'm starting 2 exercise classes, and I've re-started some brain training games that I stopped doing last summer. However I haven't really cut down on my telly time so maybe 'All going well' isn't strictly accurate. I am quite pleased though...

Little steps make it easier on yourself, so don't worry about TV time just yet. You can focus on that when the others are routine!

Thank you. I think part of the problem is that the extra activity is making me more tired (in a healthy way) at the end of the day. I must take care and as soon as I feel myself nodding off, stand up and switch off the TV. It's the falling asleep and waking up disoriented and groggy that I hate, and then I find it difficult to get to sleep in bed.

other = too successful , diet to loose weight by reducing carbs. but had to add carbs again as lost too much. Just needs adjusting to maintain now.

Increased walking to 4 miles a day seems to have made it a lot easier to burn the carbs.

My other is: I haven't decided what mine is or are to be yet. I had to look the word up to see what it really meant and now it is not as scary.

I voted that mine are going well

I have a complex set of varied resolutions every year, which I then break down into quarterly and monthly plans which get reviewed. I have become reasonably skilled in setting SMART goals that enhance rather than burden my life.

Goals which require something to do done 'every day' as the only measure of success are vulnerable (you miss one day and you feel the whole thing is ruined and give up). Many years ago I participated in the pilot of the online version of the Expert Patient Programme. There was a whole heap wrong with it but I took away one interesting idea which was that if there was something you wanted to do every day you set a goal of 5 days a week.

Mine include things like a monthly bath and doing 20 'Things to Do' over the year ('Things to Do' in this context not being chores but new places to visit - walks, cafΓ©s, last year's total turned out to be 41 in a difficult year, so go me!), books read (and that's broken down into working my way though things unread on my shelves) So each month there will usually be a good few DONEs as well as some NOs.

My life is very challenging at the moment - I suppose my true goals are "Don't burn out" "Don't let your Dad get another pressure sore" and "Meet the tribunal deadlines for our education appeal" So I am being very kind to myself... but resolutions do help to prioritise some activities that help.

In terms of healthy eating I've got fairly modest goals for January - as previously mentioned the first half of the month tends to be eating up Christmas leftovers. My weight went up a kilo from New Year's Eve to New Year's Day so I set a relatively challenging goal of 1.25kgs to lose in the month, because that kilo might have dropped away all by itself... sadly not! So that's not going particularly well. And although one of my resolutions for the year is to eat more vegan, with a tentative goal of one day a week, it doesn't feature in my intentions for January as a) Stilton mountain and b) I am re-thinking it because the real sticking point is that I like my breakfast coffees to have milk in and non-dairy just isn't working for me, so I fail at that point every time, so I should look for another way of defining 'more vegan'

Apologies for a bit of an essay. I've been a bit dismayed by the polarisation between the usual "New Year New Me" "Living my best life" (so often commercially driven) and "I am enough" (where that really arises out of 'I'm not setting any goals because I won't achieve them and then I'll feel bad'... which surely means you could do with some tweaks in your life to improve your mental health and to learn how to set goals which support you rather than undermine you)

I decided I'd try a dry January and so far so good. I'm sleeping better, have more energy, fewer hot flushes and hopefully it's helping my waistline πŸ˜ƒ

New Year was a great incentive - Dry January really helps kick start a diet!
