Great job, Hidden !ππ For part of my New Yearβs resolution is to try and get more reading done.ππ
Thanks Leah, thrillers no doubt....π
Great Poll Jerry, I selected exerise more, learn a new skill, save money and other - the other was doing more to help animals
Thanks Debs, I like the sound of learning a new skill and youβre a big softie wanting to help animals so good luck with all your goals. π
My other choice is to TRY to be healthier and exercise but as I have COPD it's quite a challenge.
Good for you and good luck as thatβs a great goal π
Good luck Flossie1920 - thats very brave of you
Good Luck ,πFlossie1920
Good luck on that Flossie and well done to you as that sure is a challenge. I wish you every success.
Can but try but even thinking about it is tiring..... going to have yet another start day which is tomorrow. I'm called "Mahayana" Mary. Apologies for spelling mistake but it's meant to mean tomorrow.....as in everything start tomorrow. Oh well it's got to be done. Xx
I should imagine it is but well done to you thinking about doing this it's incredible.
I have also rejoined slimming world on-line. Determined to get to my target weight. It worked before and gave some structure to my eating
Good for you and good luck π
I had my New Year's resolution made for me when I found that a new branch of Slimming World had just opened only 5 minutes away from home. Before, I always said that I'd like to join them but there wasn't a group close enough - no excuse now. So I went to the first meeting and have committed myself to 12. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough interest, but in fact there were 50+ women and 3 or 4 men. I find their system is a reasonable and simple one to follow, especially as so many foods are unlimited and it's easy to base one's diet on those.
I've been ill with GCA and PMR for a couple of years which has robbed me of much of my energy, but I'm definitely improving now. I'm determined to get back to my former hobby of dressmaking, which I've severely neglected. I also aim to finally learn how to crochet. I've been knitting for years but have never until now felt the urge to crochet.
I wish you well with this, well done for making an effort as youβre worth it. π
Good luck with it. I also do not know how to crochet, and have thought about learning this. I only know the basic stitch. I know how to knit, which I must start up again. One day at a time.
Exactly. We have to know how to pace ourselves. I'm trying new skills partly just to keep my brain cells working, but I've got a lot of cotton and linen yarns which would make very nice bags - ideal presents when we're being encouraged not to use disposable plastic bags. So with luck that's what all my sisters and friends will be getting next Christmas. Good luck with all your endeavours.
My sister sews, and she made some lovely tote bags last year. She is starting to sell her wares, as I encouraged her to do so. She has sold out now, and will be making a lot more to go to craft fairs. Maybe something for you to think about as well. I can't sew to save my life, but I do grow plants instead.
Ya know, there are 5 things on that list that I would like to do (excluding dry January and eat less meat. I selected learn a new skill because that I think is the one that I will be most successful at.
Good luck with this.π
My 'other' is to organise my home more efficiently by ruthlessly sorting and disposing of stuff I don't need. Either passing it on to others, recycling at the local centre, charity shops or in the bin! Also going through old paperwork and shredding.
Fresh start to the year sounds good to me π
Start decorating and sorting our house and garden after major renovations. Planning the vegetable and fruit gardens and this yearβs crops. Dealing with increased and ongoing mobility and other physical issues. Seek a new counsellor as I need someone new after moving house. Basically keep fighting to stay as fit, active and healthy as I can.
This sounds good to me youβll reap what you sow in your garden π
Wasnβt sure how to add other.. but I going to be writing more.. even if itβs no sense to anyone but me!
π
My others are
1. Sell more on eBay ( Iβm trying to get rid of βstuffβ I have a lot of stuff!)
2. See more theatre, music, live events & Exhibitions. Luckily I live in the London area so have plenty of choice
Sounds good and make the most of whatβs on near you π
Good luck π
My 'other' is to try to get to bed earlier. Always seems to be after midnight, no matter what, & it's not good! π
Thatβs a great idea π
Oh I should've put that down too! I have been trying lately but always miss my deadline even though I set reminders on my Fitbit and Alexa Dot. They nag me and I ignore!
The other for me is joining an online slimming club
Other: Trying to get back into painting (not DIY). Chronic illness has made it hard for me to use my hands, but working on some artistic projects as presents this past Christmas has made me want to try again. I wish everyone a great start to the new year this January - whatever changes you do or donβt make
I wish you well with this as a chronic illness sounds debilitating. π
An excellent poll again Jerry, I wangvto do more exercise. π
Thanks Alicia and I hope you achieve eyry goal π
Thank you Jerry
Eat healthier exercise more save money and other - being to up my water intake, i used to be so good at hittin 2L but am absolutley rubbish these days !!!
These sound great goals to me so good luck Ml. π
Limiting as much sugar as possible from my diet. Walk more.
Hey great goals so good luck π
My focus in January is eating up leftovers, reducing food waste.
(I have a whole load of New Year Resolutions which I then break down into quarters and months and review and refine - so I have targets for how many kms run in January, days I do a yoga practice, a year long books read target and so on.
In relation to food, my year targets are
- weight loss (never got it much below top end of healthy BMI and a lot round my middle still and it has crept over)
- more vegan eating, ideally one day a week although actually I think it is the 'day' that's the issue, if I set a %meals target I think that might work better
- reducing food waste
Ideas for stilton warmly received! (I'm having lots of ploughman's lunches without the bread, and I do love stilton and pear on a pizza)
Excellent goals I wish you well with them, you can buy vegan blue cheese Tescoβs sell an own brand one. And good for you for wanting to reduce waste.
Good luck with your goals. π
I won't be buying any more blue cheese of any sort for a long time yet! I have also returned yet more blue cheeses that wound up in my fridge but that I didn't buy.
Will start thinking more about vegan eating when the stilton mountain diminishes (I must confess that I bought a big 'un in the post Christmas clearance despite knowing I had some to eat up already)
Explaining other. I am currently reading an excellent book entitled "Lies my Doctor told me" by Dr. Ken Berry. He exposes all the lies about Cholesterol, Statins and other treatments such as losing weight by exercising told to patients by their doctor. Another I have is "Too Many Pills" by Dr. James Lefanu.
I commend both of them to members of this page as they reveal a lot of the corruption in the health services. Lefanu explains how patients are now customers and how Doctors in the U.K. are paid for prescribing drugs to patients even if they don't need them. Our son in America suspects that the same is going on over there after having visited his doctor for a routine company medical.
My new skill is one I try to learn throughout the year and that is editing photographs on the computer and creating documents suitable for publication using a "publishing" programme. All very satisfying and good for the old brain. 84 in March! ! !
And good for you Tibbly and good luck with editing photoβs. π
Eat less meat including poultry. I don't eat much meat now, only pork sausages once a month. Poultry once a week. If I was on my own it would be less but OH likes his meat and home made sauces which I'm working hard to avoid making them, and use home made soup for a sauce instead which he is happy with. Fortunately he also likes fish. I'm on a weight reducing diet so eating healthily is important to me. I would like to walk more but breathlessness and Arthritis usually decide how much I can manage without making joint pain worse.
Great goals and you are very accommodating with your OH, so good luck with your goals .π
I 've begun every January since having my eldest son (except the ones where I was pregnant with his brothers) intending to lose weight, and I do, every year, varying amounts, but then something happens to derail my mindset and I end up back where I started. This year I'm approaching it differently. I do still need to lose the weight, I'm 54 now and the extra couple of stone I carry round isn't doing my health any favours, but I'm trying to get to grips with the way I think and see if I can change my mindset so next time I don't throw in the towel when life happens. I have a little book called "Ditching Diets" by Gillian Riley and I'm trying to practice her philosophy which in a nutshell is about focusing on reasons for eating in a healthy way by owning the choices we make, and by owning choices remove " rules" as even sensible self imposed rules can make you feel like rebelling. Don't know if this is the answer yet but it does make sense to me and I need to try something different because what I've always done never works long term.
My other plans for this year are to reduce food waste by better planning, both when shopping and making sure if things are going to go out of date I prep/ freeze them. I'm also planning to set up a standing order to a local food bank rather than contributing random items to the box in the supermarket as I've learned the staff can make much better use of the money by bulk buying. The money I save by better planning can go to help someone who is struggling to afford food.
Hi Fran, I think that you're right to want to change your eating habits so that your weight doesn't yo yo. You are trying to change your thinking which's spot on in my opinion as we kid ourselves that a 'treat' will make us feel good when it makes us unhappy in reality.
I think cutting food waste is in everyones best interests and giving a standing order to a food bank is highly commendable so good for you for that. And I wish you well with your weight loss you can do it more importantly you are worth making the effort for as you'd feel so much better. π
What a good idea. There are so many views on what is right for us to eat, but every body is different. I know that I need to increase my exercise as my body has gone to sleep π€. I am going to try out a new approach myself to see what foods are making me so ill.
Great Chart, can see a lot of people chose the same as me. For me, I am having a few issues with food at the moment, and I am having to start eliminating foods, to find out what is triggering my IBS again. This time is it is really bad, and I have been very ill with it for the past week. I am so confused about the foods I can and cannot eat, that I am really depressed. I have put on all the weight I have lost, even though I am actually eating less of it. Not sure if I have an underactive thyroid now. It is something that many women get around my age group. Is there anyone else having this health issue. I have been on so many websites and it is all conflicting. Some websites say I should be eating berries, others say I should avoid them altogether. Feels like I cannot eat anything. Haven't felt like talking with anyone at the moment, just feeling really low.
Hi RoseyTB, And poor you, some of our members have IBS and we have past posts on IBS if you want to use the search box.
Here's a link to the IBS network:

I'm sorry that you're finding things confusing and am sure you'll get a good response to any questions that you have on here. And I hope that you find some helpful answers.
Jerry π
Hi Rosey
Iβve found that the low FODMAP diet has been very helpful for my IBS-C. Itβs got some science behind it. I bought a cookery book to help with working out what to eat and am now re-introducing some foods to see what I can tolerate. Good luck with finding what works for you.
I have had this for years now, but this is the worst I have had. I am trying to keep to a low fibre diet as I can't digest fibre very well. It is so hard. Just lately I am finding that everyday stuff is affecting it. I have just bought a new book, where the author suffers with it, but her diet it vegan, and I don't want to go that route. I am going to give up coffee as that is not good for women my age.π. Also I know that is what keeps me awake.
I bought The Low Fodmaps cook book by Sue Shepherd. The recipes are good, apart from the suggestion to have gluten free cereal and toast for breakfast, I prefer to have some eggs. I was already gluten free, and needed to go lactose free as well. I found an onion free stock cube on line which has been helpful. Iβm ok with just one cup of coffee in the morning.
Perhaps have a look at the Monash University site, who developed the diet, for a good explanation. They have a lot of information on line, but I do better with a book!
