Mum & Dad in 8 months

Both my parents have suffered subarachnoid haemmorages in the past 8 months. I was at work in December and Mum's partner rang me to tell me she had had a bleed on the brain and had been transferred to Hope Hospital. Then in August, once again I was at work, and Private Number came up on my mobile. I have learned that this means Hospital! And my stomach turned, but not for one minute did I expect to hear that my Dad was very poorly in Hope Hospital following a massive bleed. To say I was a wreck is an understatement. My Mum and Dad divorced years ago, both aged 65 when it happened and both able to leave most younger people standing in the energy stakes. Mum has recovered pretty well considering, able to drive again but does have a few issues, however Dad was not expected to survive but he did. He was in a coma for over 3 weeks and is still in hospital, has only spoken a couple of times in 3 months and is now on a rehabilitation ward. It is going to take a long time. To add to his situation his lung was punctured when his feeding tube was inserted and his lung filled with feed. He pulled through this too.

Thank you Leslie, the only way I can get through this is to try to keep a sense of humour. It is such a shocking thing to happen, as I am sure you well know, that You have to find a way through the heartache. My Dad is a character and I know that is what he would want if he could tell us. Wishing you all the best, Helen

Goodness, I don't know what to say! I suspect you are doing an amazing job for both your parents, but I also imagine that it feels like skiing up hill every day. Good luck and remember to take care of you.

Thank you, you certainly have a lot too deal with too. I am so lucky that my Mum recovered well, however she does still have problems with her short term memory, joint pain and probably other things she doesn't mention but considering her SAH she is great. She is able to drive and has spent all week clearing up leaves in the garden, I am sure it's not as easy as she makes it look but she's always been a bit of a superwoman! My poor Dad has such a long way to go and nobody knows how much or little he will recover, he has always been an action man and it tears me apart that those days are more than likely behind him. You take care too.
