Hidden Disabilities and Give me space scheme

Hi,

My daughter mentioned that there is a scheme running for people with hidden disabilities. i had not heard of it before but people wearing a sunflower lanyard indicates they have a hidden disability. There is also one for "give me space" which is black and yellow

One benefit of the scheme is that retailers acknowledge that the person needs some assistance but also may be exempt from wearing a face shield.

Allegedly, it is supported by the UK major retailers.

I hadn't been aware of it until today. Quite an interesting idea and could grow if all the major representative charities in this sector gets behind it

I wear my sunflower lanyard but I have friends that are in wheelchairs that would be intrested in this so thanks

I gather from your link Sos that all my local Supermarkets are onboard with the scheme....Tesco, M&S, Sainsbury, Aldi & Argos so presumably it'll be a nationwide awareness for them. Let's hope so. x

I know Morrisons and Asda are from the website. The main problem with these schemes is the staff being aware what the company policy and the rules are.

I try to keep abreast of a things like this and only found out today when my daughter mentioned it.

I think the lanyards/ID cards need backing up with posters here & there instore as reminders to staff and also to enlighten customers...... 🤔

The scheme does have a wide range of posters, badges, car and window stickers etc.

I guess only the smaller firms will use these as the larger firms normally use their wall and window spaces for product promotions.

no problem, even before the current crisis people with "limitations" were targetted.

Once, I heard someone complaining the person they were with because I parked in disabled spot and was wearing work clothes, the sort builders carpenters wear. The comment - "He can't be disabled because he is working!" interesting thoughts that being dsiabled means you can't work or if you are disabled you can't do building work.

By coincidence my brother used to looking after the parking arrangements at a hospital.

One day he was accosted by a person complaining that he couldn't find a disabled spot to park in and had to use a regular sport. He was complaining bitterly to my brother about people misusing the disabled parking and that he couldn't park his Motability vehicle and had to walk around the hospital 3 times to find someone to complain to. He also wanted to complain that my brother wasn't doing a good job letting people park in spots they weren't entitled to.

My brother dutifully took his name and address, wrote out a statement of what the gentleman had said including the part about walking around the hospital 3 times. The man happily signed my brother's book and he gave the man a copy.

The guy was still gobbing off - until my brother pointed out that the perimeter of the hospital is 1.8 miles and that he had done it 3 time he must have walked over 5 miles . And as far as he knew to get any blue badge or even a motability vehicle the limit was measured in a few yards not miles !

Suddenly, his mood changed .........
