Severe headaches after TBI

Hi All

Hubby has had the most excruciating headache today . He said it’s at the front of his head and it’s the worst he’s had . It seems to mirror all the signs of a migraine , throbbing pulsating headache at front of forehead and he has symptoms of nausea more than being affiliated to pain from his tbi . He’s been sat in the garden today and although he’s been drinking water I don’t know whether the headache is dehydration related as it’s been awfully hot today . He’s managed to go to sleep and he’s resting now but don’t know how to relieve this headache. I’ve tried pain killers cold towels and dark room . He’s drank lots of water too . I’m just hoping it’s not anything serious and hope the sleep will do him good . Any advice gratefully received . Thanks xx

Oops sorry, don't know what happened then ?

Head aches make you feel pretty miserable. I find having a sleep helps, also taking paracetamol as soon as you feel a headache starting can help prevent the headache escalating. I have also taken some sudafed in the past which have worked for me because congestion and hayfever can cause headaches too.

If you have exhausted all home remedies and you hubby is still suffering maybe a call to your GP is called for. I really hope he gets some relief soon.

Regards Irene

How long has it been since his TBI?

Severe, persistent headaches can be worrying but I've found that hot weather and bright sunlight are certain triggers for migraines since my brain injury.

Over the weekend I decided to tackle an outdoor project regardless of the heat, then paid the price with nausea, exhaustion and splitting headache. I took Co-Codamol last night and I've stayed in front of my pedestal fan all day today with light meals, loads of fluid and 6 hourly Co-Codamol, and thankfully the pain has eased !

It's half past midnight now and I'm sitting in the dark watching the electrical storm through my open bedroom window ; quite spectacular !

Make sure your man keeps up the extra fluids as long as this heat persists ; we 'Bi-ers' seem to need more hydration than most other folk. 😏 Take care....x

It's early days in his recovery and every day can be different. In my recovery the first 3 months are a bit of a blur I remember sleeping alot because I felt really tired,, constant headaches dizzyness and confusion. I'm pleased to say that now 8 months post TBI I have improved alot. I was taking regular pain medication ( co -codamol and ibuprofen) anyway for a back problem which definitely helped with the pain of head trauma . I let my body tell me what I need and try and not push myself to hard. My consultant told me it's a marathon not a race to recovery .

My advice to your hubby would be to take each day as it comes. Take medication when needed, rest as much as possible and don't feel bad for not feeling good. Drink plenty of fluids especially now during this heat wave. If his headaches don't improve then seek medical advice .

I hope tomorrow is a better day for you both, take care x

Hi,

A lot of us get increased head pain when the air pressure get very high. Which is what could be affecting you husband.

Next time it rains ask him how he feels ?

Just a cautionary note. I don't know what is causing the pain, I know I went through a period of severe pain, put me back in hospital for pain management, but that was early in recovery.

But about the water, the average person needs two litres of fluid in a day. This might be slightly higher in hot weather. But be careful not to over dose, yes I did say over dose. Two litres in one go, or a much greater amount of water over a period of time can be dangerous and increase pressure in the head. Drinking contests involving quantity have been banned in this country, because of associated risks.

I know that people can have problems with fluids, generally around knowing if and when they have had a drink, and how much.

Update he’s much better today I think personally it was the fizzy drink he had yesterday which seemed to be the trigger for the headache . Thanks so much for the love I really appreciate it and you have really put my mind at ease xx
