A real bummer

On 1/13/2020, I too have had this unfortunate incident take place. As soon as the nurse stuck the need at my elbow, the shock went to my wrist and thumb. I work with my hands and need my arms and it has been very unpleasant I might add. I contacted my doctor and she said it couldn’t be a nerve, more likely a vein. She said put a cold compress. I’m a skeptic. Nothing has worked yet. I’m very encouraged by each post here that it will go away over time. However, working with my hands 50 hours a week does not allow much rest time as many have described is needed.

Not sure this is the best place for advice as this is a brain injury forum.

But I've had some rough blood tests where the needle has hit a nerve and caused 'electrical' sensations down into the wrist/thumb area and bad bruising. The nerve pain can take a few weeks to settle down and I found Ibuprofen gel and exercise helped.

Thank you so much for the info. I apologize if I am in the wrong forum but I actually was posting and responding to a forum of 40+ people who have had pain from a blood draw. I have no idea how my comment ended up in a different forum. Thank you so much for the response, I will definitely take your advice.

Hi, if it was a blood test, or if it was a veinflon it is unlikely to be a nerve, they are deeper than veins used for access. It could be two separate events that coincided. But other forums may know different. I was trained in phlebotomy and have never heard of a nerve being involved. Access can be painful if the vein moves or if you have scar tissue around the puncture sight. It could be that a nerve got pinched in the joint, it sounds like possibly the ulner nerve, this can become trapped at several points from the shoulder, down the arm, it is a common injury.

Interesting and very enlightening. My whole arm hurt to touch yesterday like it was bruised. So strange. I actually was posting this in a forum where people with the same problem had posted and have no idea how my post ended up in this forum instead. I appreciate your response and will read more about it and how to remedy. Thank you so much!
