It's been 6 months now since my mom had the surgery. She can now identify 80-90% of things that are shown to her, also can tell people's names when asked about her earlier life, like her colleagues, friends, etc. Albeit all one word answers and has to try twice thrice to get them right..but I fell this is also some progress. Although I am still anxious to see her as she was before. Partly also because we still have her Cancer to treat. Hoping she gets better soon and I get back my mom.
Thank you all.

I think in a previous post you mentioned how you'd read that a 6 month period is the limit to improvement after an acquired (none traumatic) brain injury...…...not true. Mine was acquired (brain haemorrhage) and I plateaued at around the 2 year point. Even now, 7 years on, I see progress.
But I'll never be (as you put it) 'As I was before'. Our issues such as short term memory loss, emotional lability, mobility or other issues (people's after-effects vary) are often for life but can be overcome with management, which comes with time and experience.
I'm so sorry you mum's had so many health issues to deal with and I know how unfair and scary it feels for loved ones, but she's progressing well. I hope the day when she can start on cancer treatment isn't too far away and that there are better days ahead for all of you.
As Cat says we all vary in our aim to get back to where we once was, mine was 10 years ago in July or August all my family have forgotten. I wish you and Mum all the best and life seems unfair as like your Mum you get hit with a double whammy so to speak !! I live for today and am so glad I made it. Good luck to your Mum and you. I have short term memory loss also and I know I'm better as we laugh at things I said when I was out of it. Thought I was in a cafe when in hospital and said to Daughter my Treat.. Good luck to you all and my baby is 40 plus but she will always be my baby...Good luck and keep good work up ..I was out for a year and remember nothing, had a shunt put in to stop hydrocephalus and woke up singing as my Sisters used to keep singing to me XXXX Swears by music helping me now, poor family xxxx
Turmeric; Omega-3 Fish Oil; Chlorella & Spirulina, Vitamin C, Vitamin D. A family member started on these daily supplements to help support her cancer battle and is now up and running doing the sports she loves again albeit continuing on her cancer fight.
I hope your mum's diet is not too heavy in sugar and fat to allow her body to detoxify and heal more quickly.
Great news on the recognition of 80-90%. A real achievement that should be celebrated and will likely be giving your mum a sense of strength and hope.
The recognition facility in the brain is like a foundation stone. Once the brain trusts that it can recognise its environment (with the associated emotional experience memories attached to those individual things or people), the nervous system can start to settle down a bit and not constantly be in alert mode which is often wearing and tiring on emotional lability.
Sounds like she has a good motivational partner in yourself. Where she goes next in her repetition of tasks and learning to continue brain rewiring is going to be an indicator of how she feels. Given the right support, her recovery speed may increase if her nervous system is well supported with vitamin B. Risks are more likely to be taken if feeling more calm and in taking those risks, new learning is more likely to be reached.
Best of luck. Inspirational post. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes.
