'OPERATION LIVE' ON MY 5 CATCHUP.

I watched a fascinating programme on Thursday night this week (channel 5) in which surgery to clip an aneurism was broadcast live from the Royal London hospital. It was a 2 hour op. and showed every detail of the procedure from craniotomy right through to cranioplasty. It's not everyone's choice of viewing but I was utterly transfixed by the dedication & patience of the surgeon (we seemed to be watching through his eyes) and the perfect harmony between he and the 6 members of his team.

It was a well crafted programme, introducing us to the lady patient and her family beforehand, and the surgeon did a commentary throughout, so not only did we get to understand the procedure but were constantly reminded of the humanity beneath. It left me pretty emotional...…..but in a good way.

I knew something of cranioplasty and clipping from members here and have seen the procedure on YouTube, but this, being shown in real time and with the personal touch of real people, is a rare event and adds an extra level of interest and concern to the whole 2 hour event.

I felt privileged and SO much more enlightened into the how, where and whys of that particular procedure.

If anyone's interested you can Google 'My 5' ; select search, then type in 'Operation Live'. It's episode 3.

Love to all, Cat x

Hi Eileen, i watched it too, it was fascinating wasnt it. Held my breath at times. Id like to see a follow up now to see any issues she faces. I felt they were a bit blase about her recovery.

Oh yes ; good luck for tomorrow m'dear. But you won't need luck at such a great hospital. Giving the best of Expertise & care is what Salford Royal does every day. My surgeon will always be my no1 hero ........so engaging and human...…..and brilliant !

Come back as soon as you can Alice. Thinking of you. Cat xx

I tried to watch it as I thought it would be fascinating but J have to admit I turned it off after about 10 minutes. Found it a little bit too close to home for me...

It isn't for everyone I know. My late ex husband was a 6'2" butcher who liked a dare, but he once came close to passing out watching a televised heart operation, and if one of the children cut themselves he went all queasy...…..said he couldn't stand the sight of human blood ! 😵

My husband watched 3 seconds and said “that’s it I’m off to bed” lol so much for him holding my hand

Ha ha ; it seems men are more squeamish than women ; my partner watched with me but I noticed he shielded his eyes quite often. I can't help but find brain surgery expertise fascinating......and a little bit heroic. So I can detach myself from the unsavoury aspects because the mechanics of problem solving is so interesting and enlightening ! x

I used to get migraines way way back, but they left me and since SAH every so often I get zig zag lines in the corner of my eye. Off to bed I go with pain killer and rest up or doze off..awake and they are gone phew. Daughter has migraines and they knock her for 6 so I know how you feel Cat good luck and rest up xxxx. Once with migraine she couldn't get her words out properly so because of me she had a MRI ..All okay but put my mind at ease also xxxx Be Well and rest

I watched it after your recommendation Cat and i was like yourself couldn’t stop watching although it was opposite side and mine was ruptured but fascinating all the same

Hello again Dizzy ; really good to see you ! Yes mine was a frontal lobe bleed (coiled) so also a very different procedure (nowhere near so invasive). But since my surgeon showed me the scan of my bleed...…. then the scan of it coiled, I swapped my squeamishness for awe !

Hope you're doing ok and the olfactory issues have resolved one way or another. Best wishes......x

Hi cat, my op not gone to plan, I collapsed on the Sunday night, went by ambulance on the Monday morning, to Salford where taken for surgery and a clot is in front of opening so couldn’t put more coils in. Stayed in for three days and going to keep close eye on what’s going on, will be in touch as things develop, thought I’d got off lightly, take care Alice xx

cat3 in reply to Alibongo60

Oh Alice, poor you. I'm not clear on who's keeping a close eye on things ; Salford Royal I hope...……….

Please take care and don't do anything to put yourself at risk. I'll be thinking of you m'dear and waiting to hear from you when you're ready.

Love and big hugs, from Cat xxx

I saw most of that show too Cat. Really interesting.
