Triple heart bypass.

Hello, my husband had sca 22months ago resulting in severe hypoxic brain injury, he has triple vessel heart disease, which he is doing well on medication alone. He has been on cardiac rehab program and is now on an activity for life program. We are now at a stage where we are considering a triple heart bypass and due to discuss this with cardiologist soon. We have been told that with any major surgery there are risks involved, one is that he may be put back neurologically! We obviously do not want this as he is doing well, even if improvements are slow. Just wanted to get some advice, or if anyone else been in this situation, thanks

I'm not sure I understand how a heart bypass can further complicate a brain injury, especially with all the usual breathing apparatus and other safety measures in place during the op.

I had a general anaesthetic 12 months after a Subarachnoid Haemorrhage for the removal of my gall bladder and, though I'd been left with debilitating after effects after the SAH, the gall bladder surgery wasn't further detrimental in any way.

I'm sure the cardiologist will be able to address any concerns you & your husband have though m'dear ; I hope you get the answers you need for reassurance and that the bypass goes smoothly to give your man a better quality of life.

All best wishes, Cat x
