Modafinil (smart drug)

Hi all

Was wondering if anybody else was given Modafinil in recovery/rehabilitation of a brain haemorrhage?

I was put on it in December 2012 during my rehabilitation and it brought me on so much. The rehab team made a video of me before I was on the drug and a few months later and the change was unbelievable. I still take Modafinil nearly 6 years on and I’m told it’s non addictive but I believe the affect is. My doctor reviewed my medication the other day and I told him I need it due to mental fatigue (I think the affect is addictive😁)

Anybody else been given Modafinil?

Hi, according to the internet, id never heard of it so looked it up, its mainly used for narcolepsy, so i assume not routinely for brain injury. Was it more of a trial?

Looks like it could be the way to go though, especially if it helps overcome the fatigue AND sharpens up cognition.

Im seeing the consultant on Thursday, may run it past him, its a nootrope and one of the drugs students take during exam time to give them the edge if they can get hold of it.

Very interesting, thanks for bringing it to my attention. Im dabbling with nootropes but not seriously, the ones i can get hold of, because im wary of buying on the internet, are only low dosage and probably not very good.

Hi Kirk5w7..

I understand that Modafinil is prescription only here in the UK but it helped me through my rehabilitation and still helps me with my mental fatigue. If you suffer with fatigue maybe it could help.

I meant neuro fatigue not mental 😬

I only discovered Modafinil years after my TBI. It helps me push through the overwhelming fatigue if and when I need to, when I can't go and sleep. I tend to take half a tablet at a time as I find they make me nauseous. I also find that my brain NEEDS to rest, to recharge my 'batteries', so I would definitely not take Modafinil every day. In my experience damaged brains tend to need more rest than undamaged ones. I would say that Modafinil is habit forming rather than addictive. That's probably not much help, sorry.

Hi SillyPhil

My brain haemorrhage wasn’t due to an accident it was because I had an AVM in my brain stem so maybe it’s a different case or maybe it’s down to preference as I have an afternoon nap after my morning dose of 100mg.. I was pretty much locked in before Modafinil.. I’ve heard about people unable to sleep whilst on it, the only side affect I’ve come across is dizziness/vertigo but that also comes with my damage.
