Prayers For Jackie

Last Tuesday, my mom got dropped off to the hospital from a cardiac arrest. The doctors say she wasn’t breathing, and it took them 20 min to resuscitate her... Her brain stem is still working she is initiating breathing, and they see no problems with her heart, they believe that she went into arrest due to COPD & undetected pnemunia. As of today they say her EEG and catscan show major damage and we “ should start making some decisions” she is gaging, and she moves with pain and blinks, and moves her mouth around.. every time we se somthing we rush to tell the staff and they say it may not be purposeful. We are so lost, we see so many recovery stories here, but at the hospital they always say they don’t want to give us false hope.. because of reading her I asked them to give her a trach.. and hopefully that take some stress from her pressure breathing... she has been sedated the entire time, 7 days, when they ween her off her heart rate and blood pressure go haywire.. I guess what I want to know is if anyone knows if the catscan or EEG can change over time.?!

I am very sorry this has happened. What follows is merely one person's opinion from my point of view. Anyone who doesn't die recovers to some extent, in that they did not die. HOWEVER - each person's recovery may not represent any quality of life at all. For me I would rather have died than live the greatly reduced quality of life and inability to do things and the burden it puts on all those around me. I look at it like this - how great of a life will this person, their family and friends have living like that. I currently have my health directive setup so that if ever again I need to be resuscitated I have selected DO NOT RESUSCITATE.

All that said - I wish I had the answers you are looking for and could provide some direction that could be helpful for your situation. I wish you peace and comfort as you go through this.

Thank you for your insight, I can imagine that such a huge change to your life is traumatic, but I know my mother would love a second chance at life, even if it is altered, and I really want it for her.. so I’m going to try my best to be strong for her, and make whatever sacrifice necessary ... 🙏🏽

So sorry about your mum Rd ; just wanted to add my best wishes for some positive developments. Remember that doctors won't commit to a prognosis where there's been injury to the brain, but 7 days is very early days indeed for signs of progress.

What a frightening time this is for you, but your mum is young enough to fight, so keep talking to her and making physical contact to help her find her way back........

Al best wishes, Cat x

This is tough but having brain stem function is really good. Let's look at some good things here, she's young, brain stem in tact. And she's alert. At some point if she is gagging the trach would be the best option unless the put her on the mask. People have lost oxygen from 8,10,20 mins and have recovered although the length of time varies. She also has a good heart so I would implore you as you said, to not give up yet. These doctors are going to be bleak, heartless ans some times rude because they really aren't versed with the true knowledge and understanding of surviving a traumatic brain injury so they really don't know. I will pray for you and your mom and family. I hope she gets better xx

Hi

My son now 30 suffered an anoxic brain injury 3 years ago. He is in a nursing home but he now laughs and smiles whenever I visit him. The doctors had told me he’d be dead in 6 months . I keep praying, singing and making physical contact with him. He is a fighter and I believe he’d want every chance to live even in this limited capacity. He’s my only child so I won’t give up. Please continued to fight for your mom. Dr Fins info is very good. Give him a listen
