I rang The helpline today and what a relief it was to speak to someone who actually understood how it is to live with someone who has a brain injury! She suggested I came on her so here I am! My husband is 57 and was knocked down by a car 51 years ago. He was on phenobarbitone for 6 months and then assumed to be ok. He’s had a lot of problems since then but none were attributed to a brain injury. He has “rage attaches”, non epileptic seizures, severe short term memory problems, communication problems, lack of reasoning skills, the list goes on... he was recently diagnosed with FND bit not actually given any treatment and I didn’t feel that the diagnosis exactly fitted his symptoms, which have some similaries to autism and also to schizophrenia. It was only when I rang Headway that she explained that all these symptoms could well be a result of the accident all that time ago. I know there’s a long way to go but it was a relief to at least get some explanation for his symptoms and know others have similar problems.

Hi and welcome to the site. So glad you are starting to get some answers. The more you look into it the more you realise just what a massive effect a BI can have on someone. I really wish the public at large were more aware of this stuff.

hiya my suggestion is get a referal back to a neurologist.

i have a brain injury due to a stroke 6 years ago, hate strangers, i lose it now and again and then act as if nothing has happened, compared to just after my stroke, my wife would come home wondering who id upset for dropping a spoon, im noise intollerant.

i suffer from short term memory loss, also i can be having a conversation and i forget the word i was going to say, so my wife and i play games to try and help me remember.

i have actually been diagnosed with epilepsy and adult adhd. although not diagnosed, i think i have, whether its caused by my brain injury or a mild for of autism, but i insist on all plugs being pulled out and all doors being closed, as i say , this has only been since my bi.

Thank you Steve, can I ask whether you have any medication to help with the anger issues? I really would like him to get medication to help.

yes i take medication for my anger issues, they wanted to put me on anti depressants but i told them what they could do with them, then we agreed agreed on epilim, but they forgot to tell me that epilim could pile weight on, so im being weened off those and onto carbamazapine.

does your husband have a psychiatrist or neurologist?

Hi you'll find support here, welcome.

I met someone who'd been told no symptoms from his TBI for 20 years, obvious to me within 5 minutes.

His Headway group facilitated a Neuropsychologist's assessment, symptoms confirmed and explained. I've never seen anyone so happy to be told they're disabled.
