Suggestion for Cranioplasty

On 28oct 2017 my father suffered major brain haematoma he underwent the craniotomy (surgery) .Now Dr has advise us for cranioplasty .Can anyone suggest me whether there is any risk involved if we transfer the bone from one hospital to another for the surgery? What are the risks involved in cranioplasty?

Hi Pooja. I suggest you make an appoinment to speak to your father's consultant on this matter as he could give you precise information about the risks/side-effects of cranioplasty

I know it's a common procedure after craniotomy but there are variations depending on the patient's needs and the sugeon's choice of procedure. Many surgeons now prefer the use of Titanium plates to replace the skull ; others will store the bone flap in the patient's abdomen 'til ready for replacement.

Maybe your father's consultant chose to store the flap cryogenically (freezing) to save your father from further surgery ; both methods are equally effective. The main risks are apparently infection, clots and, more rarely, stroke. But the actual transporting of the flap shouldn't be an issue as it'll be securely stored in a sterile condition.

I hope all goes well for this final stage of your father's treatment ; there's every reason to be optimistic. But please get professional advice to put your mind more at ease.
