These days a subarachnoid haemorrhage isnt as serious as it was 20 yrs ago.

Put your trust in the doctors as they now know a lot more

Hi Rhys. I had a SAH 5 years ago and was hospitalised for 2 months, and it was around the 3 week point when I started to become conscious of my surroundings and started to engage with staff & visitors.

So I suspect that at this (very) early stage your mum might not be too responsive, which can be worrying I know. And once the bleed has been controlled she might still seem distant and sleep a great deal whilst her brain is using all its energy to repair.

My family were shocked by certain behaviours I displayed early on. I didn't recognise my own daughter for a while (thought she was one of my neighbours) which she found distressing. But these were temporary issues and all part my world slowly coming back into focus.

Try to keep talking to your mum. Even if she seems miles away she'll be picking up bits & pieces which will be reassuring, if only from hearing your voice. And don't be afraid to keep reminding her of where she is, and why.

I had a doctor coming to my side several times daily to reinforce that I was in Salford Royal hospital as I'd had a bleed on the brain. So once I became compos mentis, I fully understood my situation and wasn't spooked by it.

Have the doctors said whether they intend to coil the bleed Rhys ?

Thinking of you, Cat x

Hi Rhys and welcome to the forum.

Please ring the Headway helpline and just chat with them.

Take care of yourself especially while your mum is in hospital because she will need your help when she gets home.

When you visit your mum playing her favourite music very quietly, showing her photos of the family and generally being positive are all good things.

Please keep in touch with us and if there is any more we can do to help just ask.

Thinking of you both.

Try not to worry as if mum sees you getting stressed it will not help her to cope, I know that when I had a subarachnoid the worst thing was the pain headaches like you could not imagine but that was 30 years ago and I am sure things have moved on considerably since then. All I can tell you is that even then what the doctors did for me was brilliant be positive and have confidence in the dedicated medical team surrounding your mum good luck
