A MRI brain scan finally...

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie here and heard about this forum through Headway.

I am writing with great joy as I have finally had an MRI brain scan, this is about 5 months after my accident and am waiting on my results.I survived a near fatal motorcycle accident back in January this year whilst travelling in South Africa and am mending from my fractures and head injury.

It's been a journey and a half for me. I have had to relearn how to walk, use my arm again after severe nerve damage and find ways to rebuild my cognitive skills. Slowly, I am rebuilding my memory for my sense of smell, touch and taste. I mainly recognise things from sound and sight.

I have gone from being like a child, adolescent to adult again in just over 5 months. During this time, I have come across people from the good, bad to ugly in terms of attitudes to both my physical and invisible injuries.

The plus side of all of this is the amazing people that I have encountered: from medical teams, other patients in hospital, the support from those close to me and new people that I have encountered along the way. I am by no means an expert on brain injuries and just figuring out my own way to adapt to my circumstances.

As my physio thought that some people might be inspired by my journey, I started a blog to share my personal experiences, learnings and bumble along.

Here is my blog:

What a great, polished presentation. I particularly enjoyed the MRI description as it's an experience we (almost) all share.

Keep working at the rehab ; you've done amazingly so far !

Best wishes, Cat x

A positive outlook can help so much in recovery. I hope you continue to make gains.

I found the recovery rehab bit easier as you have a focus and can see a physical improvement however small, the hard bit for me was the realisation and coming to terms with the long term future. I look forward to blog updates and I can honestly say that once I was able, all I wanted was to read or watch people's real life stories just to see if I was normal in terms of how I felt and symptoms appearing etc. It really help to see others going through similar issues.

I kept a diary and it was only when I found the early stuff that I realised just how far I had actually come. Very reassuring and lifts your spirits when the chips are down.

Yes, I agree that having a positive outlook massively helps and having supportive people around too. Thank you for your words of encouragement, some days can feel like climbing Mount Everest!
