First post...... Query about head injury and pituitary dysfunction.

I had a head injury as a child where I was knocked out and gad vomitting when I came around. Most of my adult life I've had random goings on with my water balnce and my periods......None of it is linear, it all comes and goes. I'm just trying to get seen by a consultant, but this seems to be a sticking point because they say pituitary problems would be constant. Can a damaged pituitary 'cough and splutter' and sometimes appear to be working ok ? They have done blood tests in the past, but they were always in range because I was 'well' at the time.

Thank you for any help !

Hi Lil & welcome. I was invited to take part in a trial at Salford Royal, to test for pituitary dis-function in patients who they'd treated previously for Brain haemorrhage.

It was the 'Glucose test' which involves injections every 20 minutes over a period of about 6 hrs (can't remember exactly) and as many blood tests. It proved negative.

They told me it's a one-off test as our pituitary function will only alter in the instance of further brain injury or illness. And any dis-function is permanent unless treated, and present whether or not there are symptoms.

It's frustrating, I know, when there's nothing to pin your symptoms on ! Hope you get to the bottom of your issues before too long..................I'm in that same boat, so I do sympathise.

Regards, Cat x

Hi,

As I understand it the areas and glands that control the messages and hormone release are incredibly complex and there are a lot of interdependence. It only needs one thing to be out of kilter to cause a system overload. Something as simple as a low Serotonin level can cause the symptoms you experience.

Hopefully, you can at least find some answers and hopefully a remedy. Let us know how you get on.
