Hi Everyone, word to your mum :),

Like the title says, I would like you all to do something for me.

Could you use a search engine on the computer or iPad or phone , whatever and type in these words "Why is aspartame added to Diet coke?" And look at the results you get.

You may see something interesting, you might not, you might not even care. But if you don't care, I would think you were being a bit naive.

Now you can use known search engines such as Google or Bing or Yahoo! Or something similar but it is better to use a relatively new search engine called good gopher. You can find it at goodgopher.com.

I have known for a while now about aspartame and what it can do and I have ditched drinking coke altogether now, especially diet coke which contains aspartame. I even started chewing Airwaves gum for a while but not until I found that it contains aspartame. I now chew gum that is free from aspartame.

Trust me, you really do not want to be consuming this stuff, especially all the time like I used to do for years.

I don't ask for much do I :).

MJ

The damage is done for me also but the thing is, you still want to end consumption of aspartame otherwise you could easily brain cancer once again :(.

Well fortunately I mainly drink water now as my body is a temple (with extensions)!!

That is very fortunate for you.

Phew. I'm lucky, in that artificial sweeteners tend to make a rather rapid transit through my digestive tract. (Trying to be ladylike, they give me the squits.)

I avoid artificial sweeteners, and have done for years, I also avoid white sugar, because that also upsets my stomach, whole, brown sugar, on the rare occasions I use any.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Gaia_rising

Very ladylike haha.

Atificial sweeteners in general are bad news so good that you avoid them.

White sugar, or refined sugar, can make you put on weight. Large consumptions make you obese. They cause health problems, diabetes is the main one. And can lead to death.

Refined sugar seen by lots of people now as a poison and refined sugar is added to most foods now, especially processed foods, even savoury meals!

Look at the people of America. A lot of them are obese. I wonder why? That was sarcasm, when your country has hundreds and hundreds of fast food chains like MacDonald's and Coca cola is around almost every corner, you can easily see why.

England are not too far behing America now.

Yep, sugar is an appetite stimulant, so I read somewhere, putting sugar in food tricks the body into eating beyond capacity- have you ever let a McDonald's bread-bun dissolve in your mouth, SO much sweeter than 'proper' bread. (I don't eat much bread, either!)

I'm not saying I never eat rubbish, but I prefer home-made rubbish, so I know what's in it.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Gaia_rising

In original Coca cola, there is so much sugar in one can that could make a person sick but because there is a certain chemical in it, it stops people from doing that.

I haven't ever tried the McD's bread bun theory before but then again I have virtually avoided McD's for most of my life. Never really liked them even before I knew about all the sugar in there products.

I don't eat a lot of bread either. And I'm not trying to say I never eat rubbish either because I do but I try to limit it now of course :).

My teens was like most others, junk food galore. Early 20's was more healthier but could still be quite junky, as well as chunky haha.

30 is when I really started limiting crappy food.

I gave up drinking diet coke a few years ago and try to avoid anything with artificial sweeteners now....... which means looking at so many labels from breakfast cereals, other drinks , yoghurts/puddings etc ..... It helped with my aches and pains before my BI but not sure if my illness was related or now ......

Glad to hear you have given up drinking diet coke now and try to avoid artificial sweeteners.

I used to eat yogurts because you would think of them as a healthy product, they have sugar in it so they can't be that healthy.

I would rather make my own yogurt/smoothie. Get some natural yogurt. Get some frozen berries or any other fruit. Put it in a blender with the yogurt and a bit of milk, voila.

So much healthier than store bought stuff and you will also notice a massive difference in colour as well.

Yeah - though I actually don't avoid sugar as such ... just artificial stuff ....

Have broken a couple of blenders making smoothies .... they just don't like frozen bananas !! But each time I make one I remember my son " inventing" his own when he was about 7 ..... lovely apart from the whole kiwi fruit he put in ...... somewhat tangy and made me cough with the prickly hair from the skin ..... but had to say " mmm , how lovely Jamie !" ...

I don't completely avoid sugar but I do avoid much more of it and have lost weight in the process.

I try not to eat any at all throughout the course of the day but might have a small amount in the evenings.

Whole kiwi!

Never touch the stuff, nor do my children. Make my own fizzy stuff which they prefer: lemonade : squeeze 2 lemons then chop and blitz the skins with a blender in half a pint of water. Heat this to boiling point, add 1.5 lbs sugar and the juice from the lemons, add another pint of water, some citric acid if you aren't going to drink it quick/keep in the fridge, bring back to the boil. Strain and bottle. Takes about oooh 15 mins? Quicker than trotting round to the corner shop for a 2 litre bottle of chemicals anyway. Dilute with still water for lemon squash, fizzy for lemonade. And yes, I know it has a lot of sugar in it but that is half what the recipe says and it is plenty. And at least I know what is in it, absolutely and totally. Missed the elderflower season because I was off my feet with my headaches, but yippee it is blackcurrant time. Made jam yesterday, the boys and I will pick another few pounds for cordial today if I can remember where I put that jelly muslin....hmmmm.....

I'm glad to hear that you and your family don't touch it and you make your own drinks.

You may have sugar in your drink but it can't be anywhere near how much sugar is in a can of Coca cola.

Pffft I swear everything is poison these days. As science progresses, we find out what weird stuff's in our food/drink.

That's not to say I don't agree with you ;)

Snopes is usually pretty good for gathering facts on this stuff snopes.com/medical/toxins/a...

Failing diet coke, the guys at pepsi seems to be removing the stuff from diet pepsi:

Hi Ben,

People, including myself, used to say things like it years ago that every bit of food that enters your mouth seems to be bad for you or it is tainted in some way.

After research through the internet, you find that most food, especially processed foods, actually are bad for the health or have been tampered with.

This is why I try to eat more natural foods now to get away from this harmful chemicals in our foods. I'm not saying I eat 100% naturally now because I don't.

The Snopes website does sound quite interesting.

I have heard about Diet Pepsi getting rid of aspartame and using other sweeteners such as Splenda, which isn't much better. From what I know, all sweeteners are bad news. Just so happens that aspartame is one of the worst.

Take care,

MJ

Yeah fair enough. I've drunk enough diet pepsi to fill several swimming pools. Maybe that's why I have epilepsy ;)

Matt2584 profile image

Could be or it could have been aspartame or other chemicals in other foods that did it? I can't say for certain.

For years, I used to drink Diet coke and I ended up with a brain tumour.

Now I was told by my GP that my tumour was growing all my life but the thing is... How and why was it growing all my life? As far as I know, the human body is not supposed to just develope tumours out of the blue. There has to be a reason as to why.

So I accepted what the GP told me up until I found about aspartame last year. I think aspartame is the culprit. It is quite amazing how the general population has been and still is being lied to.

And if it took 11, nearly 12 years for my body to grow a tumour into the size of a hard-boiled egg, then where did the cyst come from two years later?

That's right, two years later I was diagnosed with a cyst which is equivalent to a tumour.

Two tumours in one head in the span of two years. How unfortunate is that.... Or should I say "How naive am I for consuming all those drinks containing a toxic chemical".

And another thing, do you know that it is sugar that feeds tumours as well?

B_S_A in reply to Matt2584

I've been trying to find reasons I was born with an AVM, and then more reasons why it burst. But there isn't a reason for it, and I think we have to be careful when attributing our conditions to certain lifestyle choices.

A whole bunch of things cause tumours, and there's a reason that the FDA has allowed Aspartame to be used for around 3 decades. It's amazing what a few instances can set off, instances that could just be correlational; somebody drinks a bunch of diet coke, later has a tumour with no obvious reason = tumour must be due to Aspartame. Those two things were going to coincide at some point! There are currently no reviews that show a correlation between Aspartame and tumour genesis or growth [1].

There's around 85 chemicals in stuff you eat/use everyday that can cause mutations in cells that create particular characteristics of cancer such as uncontrolled cell growth (tumours) [2]. Cells don't always behave themselves on their own either! Sometimes when a cell divides the signal telling it to stop just isn't there, which means tissue just keeps growing and growing.

Maybe I am being naive, but I think that when we start trying to find a reason for everything it always end up in hating something/someone/yourself.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to B_S_A

I don't like debates/arguments much.

I can never really think properly and end up ballsing it up :).

But it tastes so nice! LOL

It's good u can give it up! I think read in the past that acelphamine & aspartame are particularly bad together(hence why Diet Coke has it!). And think is banned in Sweden altogether. As for chewing gum think Sorbitol is the sweetener that's recomended. As i'm Type 2 diabetic aswell is particularly annoying for me-as find particularly drinking caffeine free tea is boring. Luckily i drink water, and alot of different flavoured waters now!

I admit it does taste nice but then again that would be because of all the sugar that goes into coke. Sugar is addictive, that is why sugar is added to a lot of medicines too. I remember the days when medicines used to taste gross but adding sugar sweetens them up and makes them easier to swallow.

Diet coke and coke zero and the like don’t have sugar but have a sugar substitute, a sweetener called Aspartame which is far worse for your health... well I know what Aspartame has done for my health, I used to drink gallons of diet coke.

I’ve heard of Acesulphame K, or ace K for short. Another sweetener to go with Aspartame.

As I was saying with chewing gum, I was ‘recommended’ by a nurse to chew Airwaves chewing gum but stopped shortly after once I found that Airwaves contains Aspartame.

The former Manchester United football manager Alex Ferguson had a brain tumour.

I am not a fan of football no more but I used to be and every time I saw Alex on tv he was chewing gum.

Call me crazy if you like but I would not be surprised one little bit if the constent chewing and intaking of Aspartame would be the biggest reason why he had a tumour.

I believe everything happens for a reason.

I now chew gum that is Aspartame free.

But this is something to think about, if there are people out there that will say there is nothing wrong with Aspartame then why would a company sell chewing gum that says it is Aspartame-free? I would guess that there must be something wrong with Aspartame.

I used to drink a lot of water as well until I found most water, tap and bottled, contain fluoride (sodium fluoride).

Sodium fluoride is also added to toothpastes and mouthwashes.

You can go pick up a tube of Colgate toothpaste and it will clearly say on it that it contains sodium fluoride.

Anyhow, back to water, I now drink coconut water that I get from Aldi of Lidl.
