5-HTP

This is an over-the-counter supplement. My neighbour recently suggested I try it. I can recommend it to anybody struggling with apathy and lack of energy.

I had a fist-sized meningioma removed in 1997. As it turned out, I'd picked up FRONTAL LOBE /DYSEXECUTIVE SYNDROME somewhere along the line.

It's affected my life in several ways. I find it hard to organise myself.....keep control of my life and make the soundest decisions.......have memory problems, including "blanks" when I have no recall of quite advanced conversations......can't make the sort of emotional connections I used to make.......and those aspects of the syndrome continue.

However, two other aspects of the condition seem to have been made better by 5-HTP.

First, for years I've found it really hard to get out of bed in the morning. I haven't been able to see the point. Even though I've slept well, as often or not I'd stretch, yawn, and turn over to shut my eyes.

Second, even when I got up, I found it very difficult to get anything done. I couldn't see the point. My GP and I decided this was CBA. Can't Be A....

After three days of 5-HTP, I started to feel loads better. I wake up and want to get up. I'm more active, I'm getting things done.

Here's hoping this ain't a false restart!

Has anyone else tried this stuff?

Bob

Hi Bob, what dosage would you recommend as have tried it but it gave me scary dreams. I have researched it and know of sleep studies where it has eased sleep terrors.

It is suggested 50 mg strength, but this seems to not work for me. It does give a better sleep if not for the dreams.

Also, I have had success with spirulina. The first 2 months full dose and then reduced it to half dose. This has truly made some difference in energy and sleep.

Also Schuessler tissue cell salts combo 12 seems to be a good boost for magnesium and other cell salts.

Hi there, Gina,

No scary dreams here! I'm trying 100mg a day. Where do you get your other stuff from?

Bob

in reply to Bobvant

It was purchased from a popular natural health business and is 50mg. Thanks, was interested in the dosage that is helping.

Hi Bob! I'm also suffering from a frontal lobe injury with extremely low motivation (and the other difficulties that you described). What time of day do you take your 5-HTP? When you stop taking it do your symptoms return? Or are you on them permanently? Thanks

Hi Bobvant its sounds good. Does it help with the 'I know what to do' or 'I know what I should do now' situation where you just can't do. It took me about 4 hours tonight, sorting through 'again' various medical papers to take with me tomorrow when I am having another brain scan. Over here [France] we get to always keep our medical records x-rays, scand cd's etc. wich means a lot of storage space to find, but which we then take with us for the next specialists appointment. Trouble is that's a lot of confusion for me, so do think 5 HTP is the right product to help with confusion also? Can I get it mail order ? Glad you are finding its helped you already, that always make things seem like prgress, where previously there hadn't been. Shirley x

Aye, I've found that it helps with getting myself more organised. My partner, Sue, agrees! I got mine from Holland and Barrett (was buy one get another for 1p, that offer now over but worth keeping an eye for next one). They've got an online site. Look also at Zipfit and Health Scan.

Thanks Bob, yes I have an online account with H&B and they post to me here. I like H&B, over the years never had a problem with any of their products bought when living in UK or here.

Active Contents are.....5-HTP (Griffonia Extract...aka .Hydroxytryptophan......natural serotonin lifter, after that, don't ask me!)......Niacin......Vit B6......Magnesium.

I had a short period when I couldn't sleep when I had my first op. 17 year ago, but I remember how dire it was. I hope this stuff helps you like it seems to have helped me, vj.

Always a great believer in "what works for you ..." However, one of the common traits after a head injury is that due to the trauma our body has different vitamin and mineral requirements either due to not absorbing new so efficiently or needing more of something to promote repair.

Quite often a good quality multi vitamin will supplement the majority of missing vitamins especially the energy giving B's vitamins. Omega 3 promotes cell recovery, important in brain regeneration.

Having a "clean" diet, removing much processed food, alcohol, white sugar and fizzy drinks and increasing vegetables and meat such as pork (high in tryptophan like htp) will help a lot.

With all things, ask you GP for advice first. They will normally be happy to undertake a full blood test for you which will pin point if you are deficient in any aspect especially Thyroid problems which is a major cause of sleep and energy problems

Thanks for this, sospan. I've had a shed-load of blood tests in the past few years. Not found owt deficient in, eg, thyroid activity......which has been reassuring but at the same time frustrating. If you can name a supplement, I've probably tried it........or an "alternative" therapy......the only one which did owt for me was hypnotherapy.....hoping to find summat to make me feel more alert. 5-Thingy seems to be doing it for me. There's no guarantee it IS what's kick-started me, of course, but I reckon it's worth a go. I feel as if I've come found after 15 year of not being fully in the World.

Hi there, Mike......I hope it has the same effect on you! If it does, pass the message on to your medics, eh?

Thanks Bob, I will!

I have made a pretty good recovery after having a meningioma removed in 2010 and I'm back in full employment but a few things are still slowing me down, mainly lack of motivation and trouble sleeping so I really hope this helps!

Hi Bobvan, now checked online at H&B - given prices charged + my postage to france, I have to say I am sceptical. albeit a long time user of H&B. Now I wil research ingredients yhey ay are init!

Sorry - time to shut down 2nite as dble vision and tire. xxx

I AM A VEGETARIAN, DOES IT SAY ANYWHERE ON THE H&B BOTTLES WHETHER IT IS SUITABLE FOR VEGGIES?

I RECENTLY HAD MY CIPRALEX PUT UP BY THE NEURO TO ADD AN EXTRA 10MG AT NIGHT (30MG/DAY TOTAL) AS MY NEUROTRANSMITTERS GO HAYWIRE DURING SLEEP & I WAKE UP FEELING REALLY ILL & LETHARGIC. IT'S WORKED REALLY WELL BUT THIS STUFF SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA FOR DURING THE DAY

Hi, Was it safe to take the Cipralex witht he 5-HTP? Did you have any adverse effects?

The Holland & Barrett ones I've listed below state that they are suitable for vegetarians and I think H&B also have some for vegans (as an astrophysicist, I'm a little puzzled as to why we have tablets for beings from Alpha Lyrae ...)

So the thread has been running for two months anybody tried it and found some benefits ?

I haven't but Holland & Barrett are selling their own brand tablets at half price at the moment (30 Sep 14: ~£8 for 60 X 50 mg hollandandbarrett.com/shop/... )

I had a quick browse and noted marginal claims for 5-HTP's role in improving some conditions, eg depression. vanderbilt.edu/AnS/psycholo...

If anyone wants some they can have a pot - I got it free with vitamin order but can't take as I am on antidepressants and you cant take 5HTP with SSRI A-Ds. Happy to send on for the price of postage - that would be cheaper than H & B I suspect. 30 x 100 mg capsules.
