I still struggle with sleep but found getting up and writing long to-do lists good. It helped to clear my head.

During the sleep states it is when a lot of our short term memory gets converted to long term and some of the repair process takes place. Unfortunately, one of the classic symptoms that come with an a head injury are sleep problems; going to sleep, unusual thoughts, bad dreams, stress, tinnitus they all prevent us getting a good nights rest.

For me the best thing is to set a routine of going to bed and rising at the same times. Then the traditional things of not eating too late in the evening, winding down before you go to bed. Obviously avoid the things you should be avoiding anyway by leaving out coffee, alcohol, carbonated drinks, fatty and sugary foods. Keep the bedroom cool, don't read or watch TV in bed.

Some people prefer natural products like Green tea, Lavender, Valerian etc. which may work.

Hope this helpls

Hi vimto,

We do have some information on sleep in our booklet 'Managing fatigue after brain injury'.

I can post a copy out to you if you like? Just send a private message (click our username then 'Send a message' on the right-hand side) with you full name and address.

Best wishes,

Headway.

For getting to sleep I use a meditation type CD. Its boring, I only get a few minutes into it now. It has to be a male voice.

My bigger problem is waking in the middle of the night. The rest of the household don't like me wandering around waking them up until I get tired again. At the moment I quietly read a book for a while. Reading is a struggle anyway so have to really concentrate flattens the batteries so I can have a few more hours sleep.

During the day when I want to stay awake I can fall asleep in all sorts of inappropriate places.

Rainymood ? I live in Wales, when it rained for 40 days and 40 nights it was on of our driest periods :-)

I have a hatch in my bedroom ceiling to access the attic which I always leave open so I can hear the rain on the velux windows in the roof. It's much louder than on the bedroom windows and very comforting. It's also the perfect sound to mask my annoying tinnitus which is always more intrusive at night. When there's no rain I've found Ben's rainymood recording useful.

And to ward off intrusive thoughts I count down (in a disciplined way) from 999 and rarely get past around 650.

Good luck with this, vimto. Lack of sleep is so draining. x
