Confused about results

Hi, I hoping someone may be able to give me some advice on iron levels.

My dad was diagnosed with heamochromatosis so everyone in the family had to be tested and my results are coming back kind of weird. I am a 26 year old female just to give some context.

I had iron tests done and my transferrin saturation came back as 65% (>45% was high), my iron was slightly high (like 31 and the upper limit was 30) and my ferritin was completely normal (44). They tested my for the He gene and it came back that I was just a carrier. The issue is I keep getting high transferrin saturation and the only known cause of this is iron overload. Also although my serum iron was it slightly high, I was told that as I am a woman getting my periods every month my iron is expected to be on the low side, not the high side so I don't know if this is interfering with the results.

The annoying thing is I had my bloods tested at my GP again and my transferrin saturation went down to 35% but I happened to have boom private blood tests which included transferrin saturation 2 weeks after this and it went back up to 65% again! I'm so confused as to what this means. Is it possible that I do have heamochromatosis or is it normal for transferrin to fluctuate like this? On one of my dad's heamochromatosis leaflets it says that if you get high transferrin saturation on 2 seperate blood tests then it's highly indicative of heamochromatosis. I'm confused!

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

If you don't get a reply here, you could email the Iron Disorders Institute.

If you can get an answer from Isabel, you will be on the money. There is nothing about Haemocromatosis, that she does not know.

You'll have to google them for the forum. It's a straight email correspondence.

Good luck.
