Biopsy wait

Hi, I’m new here, I have been having pain and heavy ness in my pelvic area for over a year. Then started to have blood in urine, weight loss, nausea. I was fast tracked for urologist, had ct scan and was discharged without seeing anyone. Kept going back to my GP who booked an ultrasound for pelvis, they found my uterus lining is 26mm thick and have just had hystocopy which was worse than childbirth.

I have been told the wait for biopsy results will be 6-8 weeks, it has been 1 week since and it’s hell. Has anyone else been told this long for results, I live in Kent.

I am so sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis as well as the anxiety of the wait. The reassuring news is that you are now en route for treatment.

It is almost always a requirement for oncologists to get a confirmation via the biopsy before they kick off the chemo treatment. It can take that long, unfortunately.

The biopsy will reveal the type of cancer ie High Grade, Low Grade, Clear Cell, etc.

There has been very few exceptions that I know of whereby the treatment was started before the biopsy results were ready, again this was subject to the oncologist's decision, and after a CT scan and an MRI were performed and both results have guided the oncologist to take the decision.

Please try, if you can, not to worry and perhaps in your case, it is best to wait for the biopsy's to determine the origin of the cancer whether it has started in the endometrium, as you indicated a thickness that has been noted, rather than the fallopian tubes and/or ovaries.

Rest assured that as soon as the results are out, you'll be booked an appointment with the oncologist who will explain the treatment plan that is most compatible with your type of cancer.

Hi Michelle

I'm sorry to hear of your worrying situation. The fear of the unknown can be agonising made all the worse by having to wait for results.

I guess your biopsy samples are being processed as routine rather than urgent. The length of time for routine biopsy results will vary between health trusts depending on the work load/staffing ratio of the laboratory.

In 2017 I was fast tracked on the basis of abnormal vaginal bleeding and a hysteroscopy revealed I had abnormalities on my cervix. My biopsies were processed via the urgent system and I was given the results (cervical cancer) after 16 days.

You could always contact your GP to check if your case warrants your biopsies being fast tracked. I would certainly call if your symptoms worsen.

I hope all goes well for you.

Hi Perido,

Thanks for replying to my post, I was fast tracked on 2 week referral to see gynaecologist after my ultrasound, I think COVID has a lot to do with the time you get your results. I have received a letter from consultant stating as soon as biopsy results are in she will contact me.

My GP has now put me on some HRT pesseries to ease the pain I have whilst waiting.

Only 7 weeks to go xx

Hi there Michelle, We're so sorry to hear that you've been through a painful investigation and are now having to wait several weeks for the biopsy results - it's so horrible having to wait and not knowing what's going on, isn't it?

One bit of advice whilst waiting is to try and not get too consumed by Google and things you might read on the internet - totally understand the need to want to find out potential answers, but it can often lead to more stress and worry whilst waiting for answers from test results/appointments with a consultant.

Once you've got your biopsy results and know the next steps, please do get in touch with us on nurse@eveappeal.org.uk if you need to go through anything/ask our nurse any extra questions.

Best Wishes,

The Ask Eve Team
