Hi,

Anyone been to Portugal? Did you struggle with finding GF things to eat?

Any info appreciated.

I've been. I don't recall the supermarkets having loads to buy that was specifically gf. | always take a box of my food with me so that i'm not traipsing round shops looking for bread/crackers/pasta/stockcubes etc. i found eating out easy, they were quite clued up on cross contamination and if you like fresh foods then really you should find it easy. Download some of the restaurant cards to give to the chef from celiactravel.com

Cheers. I (try to) only eat non processed foods so fresh stuff is fine and most foods that can be cooked from a raw state.

But I'll be on holiday! So I would just like to not worry too much about what I'm eating ALL the time!

Good idea about the resaurant cards! I'd forgotten about those! Thanks!

We found the smallest of supermarkets had a real good deli/meat/fish counters.....really good

I went for a week earlier in the year on my own stag do so you can imagine there were a few drinks involved... I am extremely sensitive to gluten and wheat but went the full week unscathed. I found that the food was very easy to avoid gluten as most of it is fish and meat with vegetables, sounds bland but they make a lot of clear sauces to go with it and marinades that when I asked, contained no gluten at all.

Wheat doesn't seem to feature highly in their diet at all.

One of the easiest countries to go to as a Coeliac.

Hi,

I went to Lisbon last November and found that most of the restaurants where I went were very clued up. I printed off a translation page from the Coeliac UK website which was useful. I also happened upon a health food shop which seemed to be a chain (sorry I can't remember then name) and they had a massive section of gluten free food - much larger variety than I have seen in the UK! So I bought some snack food to take out with me for the day.

Plus, a lot of their food consists of meat, fish and vegetables.

Hi BerkshireBird,

I have to say we were there twice last year and I can only agree with what everyone has said to you, it was great, I have never eaten so much on holiday for a long time.
