Coke brand coke is gluten free, as in totally gluten free. So are the caffiene free, zero, cherry, vanilla and diet varieties, as is Pepsi. However supermarket brand cokes often are not, and often neither are cokes from pub taps...

How can we find out about coke from pub taps? I always thought they were either Pepsi or Coke? Are you saying that they are generic "cola"?

M&S Cola has malt in it.

I used to have diet coke and know it is technically gluten free but I have had problems with it and had a reaction. Only thing I could work out was that it could be a problem with the caramel in it.

Although some Cola brands are allegedly gluten free, those that 'are' come into two groups - one that has high amounts of refined sugar or the other which has artificial sweeteners.

Refined sugars are what is known as incomplete and your body has to leach various other ingredients from other parts to process it. It pulls out calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium - thus precious minerals and some vitamins are destroyed in order that the sugar can be dealt with.

Artificial sweeteners in most fizzy drinks is usually in the form of Aspartame or similar. This is made up of wood alcohol, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. The phenylalanine and aspartic acid form into an ester which your body tries to pull apart. Aspartame is stored in the body because it is not a food and the body works hard to try to process it as it would do if it were a pure food of carbohydrate, protein or fat. It is believed that the wood alcohol in the Aspartame in the body eventually is changed into formaldehyde (a poison).

It is therefore probably best to avoid colas and look for something more natural.

I have always avoided it but I was at a dinner with another friend who is coeliac and she was drinking it so it made me wonder

People who are wheat intolerant avoid all diet cola's like the plague because of the artificial sweeteners. Aspartame is the closest taste wise to ''real'' sugar. Maltodextrin causes issues for some coeliac as it can be a wheat derivative and the grain source does not have to be labelled. Caramel can be a wheat derivative (E152) but I thought that E152 caramel colour had been banned in the US so would not have thought that Coca Cola or Pepsi would use this. And malt is used extensively in supermarket own brand cola's.
