Must-read article. I had never expected or wished for a cure, but I would love to think my son and grandchildren could forgo the burden of coeliac disease.

Good morning sassyl, thanks for your replies to my questions you have been really helpful. Could you tell me if you have had your son and grandchildren tested for coeliac disease. I have twin boys and a grandchild. The consultant has said when we get me sorted out he will then discuss my family but I have to make sure I am prepared for when I go back to see him next.

Hi Sassyl, I'd love to see a cure even tho' I deal with my diet really well but to be able to eat anything without the fear of being made ill is what dreams are made of for me!

So thanks for sharing this as it gives hope for the future. I also think that we should look at how much money is spent on treating coeliac and the cost to the NHS for gf food as well as treatment and would hope that funding for research for a 'cure' should be seen as an investment.

I know what I would eat first if and when a cure comes along...

Yes my son has been tested every 4 years from the age of 4 - always coming back negative thankfully. My consultant told me to do this for him about 9 years ago, and said he should be continually tested until puberty. He did say he wasn't a betting man but he would put money on my son being coeliac - he has the same IgA deficiency I have and has always had a Ttg test alongside an IgA test (worth bearing in mind for your family as you came up negative in the blood test).

As my son is only 13 we're not at the grandchild stage yet but coeliac is hereditary and also known to skip a generation - thinking ahead I will be keeping a close eye on my grandchildren's weaning when the time comes!

Hi sassyl is it just blood tests your son has and does your gp do this or do you have to take him to a specialist. I didn't know that coeliac can skip a generation.

Hi Caron,

He just has the bloods done. We used to have to get the bloods done at pediatrics via our GP, but our surgery will do it for him now that he's older. Yes, it skips generations and turns up in cousins, etc. Can't remember the statistics, but if you have coeliac then your first and second generation relatives are more likely to have it too.
