Great Jerry. We're sure many other members will also be keen. Obviously all things in moderation ; ) It would be so handy to grab a burger on the run for those days when we don't have time to prepare a hamper of GF food or miss dinner as there's no where handy and safe to eat out after socialising with friends/ work.

Here's the response we got from McDonald's HQ when we last contacted them...a year ago (you know what they say..if at first you don't succeed...), facebook.com/topic.php?uid=...

We contacted McD's in the UK to ask them to follow the lead of their Finland branches and offer a fully GF menu and bun for Coeliacs. Here's their response back...

RESPONSE:

"Thank you for contacting us.

There are no plans at present to introduce a gluten free bun onto the menu, however we do work closely with the Coeliac Society in the UK (coeliac.org.uk). We provide their members full information about which of our foods are suitable for a gluten free diet.

If you would like to take your own gluten free bun to one of our restaurants a member of staff will be happy to serve the beef and any other suitable burger filling.

We welcome customer feedback on any aspect of our business as we recognise the role this plays in moving our company forward. Your comments are therefore appreciated, have been noted and will be reviewed by the relevant internal departments.

Again, thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us.

Regards

So............what do you think of this? Have they missed the main point? If they can do fully GF in Finland (and now Spain) why not here? Double standards?

Have you emailed McDonald's ?

I don't actually like burgers but would like to see as many options for coeliac as possible and like the thought of a gf breakfast bun with bacon and eggs.

Here's what I emailed McD's:

Dear Sirs, I am a coeliac and I understand that you are offering Gluten free burger buns in some Eu countries and feel that this would be an important inclusion in the UK and all other countries. I know that you offer coeliac customers the option of supplying their own bun which is a great help but it would be so much better if you could offer the whole package for coeliac as a burger with out a bun is no fun. You could easily have the gf buns seperately wrapped so the coeliac unwraps it and adds the burger them selves this would eliminate cross contamination issues and reassure coeliac. And be a fantastic option for coeliac. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my wishes and please consider this for the future. Many thanks.

I have had the same reply from McD's:

Thank you for contacting us.

There are no plans at present to introduce a gluten free bun to our menu; etc etc

I still think its worth asking because at the end of the day the more customers that ask the better. And at least they are serving gf buns in some countries.

A coeliac friend of mine went to a McD in Sweden and asked for the gluten-free bun with grilled chicken breast and fries. The girl at the counter said 'are you very gluten intolerant?' 'Er, yes, I have coeliac disease'. 'OK, you probably shouldn't eat this then, as we use the same fat for the fries as for the chicken nuggests which are covered in bread crumbs'. SO ridiculous not being able to go 'all the way' with the GF offer.
