Hi Janie, I've seen it mentioned that you should be eating gluten for 6 weeks before a test... Good luck with it!

Hey Janie, you have my sympathies. It's really horrible having to make your self ill on purpose. (I think you will find that most of us have had to do this).

The best thing to do is contact your consultant at the hospital and ask them.

I was advised to eat gluten every day for six weeks before hand, but call them and ask and they may tell you otherwise.

I just thought I should tell you a little bit more about what happended with me just so that you have more information.

I actually had to have the endoscopy twice. The first time I tried in August I panicked too much and they had to stop. (I had to eat gluten for 6 weeks beforehand and was incredibly ill from this)

I had to had to wait until November for a second endoscopy. That time I only ate gluten for 4 days. I couldn't tolerate the tubey thing again and panicked so they couldn't perform the full test.

My consultant wrote to my doctor and advised that because my blood count was so high I was without question Coeliac and so I am now still treated by the NHS is which is great.

But it does make me question why I had to damage myself and make myself so ill (something which I still haven't recovered from properly).

If you are really worried about how ill it will make you then raise your concerns and make your voice heard and see if it's possible to eat gluten for less time.

I don't know what hospital you are going to but Winchester gave me a valium drip for the endoscopy & I didn't feel anything but was aware of what was going on in the middle of the exam.

Like others have said check with the hospital for how long you have to eat "normally". I had a second endoscopy to check that the g/f diet was working & it was!!

Tough it out, it's worth it in the end.

spoke to me doctor about it' and they give you a throat spray to stop you gagging and they give you a happy drip.......

janie :)

Oh well i consider myself lucky then,i had 2 endoscopy,s and i was put to sleep both times, knew sod all about it till i awoke.
