Hi Fifitricks. Quite a few members have mentioned mouth ulcers. If you type mouth ulcers in the search bar at top right of the page you will get a selection of Q+As to look through.

I get "bubbles" on the roof of my mouth as well as ulcers, when the bubble pops there is a really disgusting fluid inside them, and the pain is not nice,, ( it leaves a big 1inch by 1inch raw area). my dentist saw my mouth after one had popped and sent me for investigations for oral cancer as she has never seen anything like it before, the biopsy was clear for cancer.

They only occur when i have been remiss in my control. I also get big blisters on my scalp when I have eaten gluten (as well as my bum cheeks, elbows and knees)

Hi.

You sound like 100% you have the coeliac complication "Dermatitis Herpetiformis", where the antibodies that attack the gut in coeliac disease also attack the skin- search this on Google.

I suffered with blisters (huge ones sometimes) on my knees, elbows and bum for years, anywhere there was pressure on my skin. They would itch like crazy, seep and bleed when burst and take ages to heal. This ruined my teenage years. I had always had an upset stomach but was not diagnosed as coeliac until my dermatologist recognised the very rare DH and sent me for a stomach biopsy which showed coeliac disease. The only cure is a fully compliant GF diet, and the good news is, I have been clear of DH (after 20 years) for 15 years by following a GF diet. My skin is now healed and clear, though I do still have occasional stomach problems. DH sufferers are more prone to the cancers associated with coeliac disease so its very important we stick strictly to a GF diet. Hope this helps. Alan X

hi alan yes the skin stuff is definately connected to gluten, I get the occasional breakout but it is within 1/2 an hour of eating so I can usually trace the food which did the damage ( in this I am much luckier than others who cannot find out the cause for their flares)... the scars do fade and I used Bio oil to keep the skin blisters supple until they popped then to keep the red angry skin from drying out and constantly breaking down,

Ta Fifitricks! Sadly it's as if some of their training is still in the dark ages. For many it's easy to pigeon hole DH or Coeliac as either a skin or stomach problem which means they miss the fact that they are auto-immune diseases and multi-faceted with varying symptoms. Hopefully through groups like this and positive patient pester power we can encourage more Drs to understand the disease.

Hi Fifitricks yes, I suffered mouth ulcers frequently before I was diagnosed with CD. being on the G/F diet has helped me overcome the mouth ulcers and also cold sores.

i used to suffer from what i lovingly termed my nappyrash until i gave up gluten & now i know it to have been dermatitis hepitaformis....also spent all them years with almost constant cold sores/mouth ulcers & if i was really lucky a bout of impetigo.....i think i have had 1 or 2 tiny cold sores in the 12 years since gluten free....not hard to spot the connections....almost forgot the stomach ulcers which are also linked.....i used to be a bit of a wreck really....but i do believe you can call your skin the largest part of your immune system so it all make total sense....good luck with it all everyone x
