Digestive Enzymes

Hi all

I have been having a lot of problems with my skin and by looking online I would say that I have too much Histamine as I have bumps on my arms, legs, neck and back that itch a lot. I'm on anti-histamines that I got from my doctors and am relying on them as I'm even itching taking them. The doctor did give me some Steroid Cream and a Aqueous Menthol Cream for the itching.

I have carried out some more research on line and it's pointing towards diet, which I had guessed anyway but also about Digestive Enzymes helping but they ideally would need to contain:

Alpha-galactosidase, Amylase, Cellulase, Glucoamylase, Invertase, Lactase, Lipase, Malt diastase, Protease, Peptidase and one of more of the following: Xylanase, Pectinase, Hemicellulase, Phytase, Beta-glucanase.

It's a minefield out there wondering which ones to purchase, have any of used them? Also, I have had a look at reviews but of course you can't always trust those.

I appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Could you be coeliac? If so, has your doctor considered dermatitis herpetiformis?

in reply to BabsyWabsy

Hi BabyWabsy

I've been tested for Celiac and it was clear so I don't have it. It makes sense though with the skin.

Thank you for your reply.😀

except that 'testing ' doesn't always provide clarity given the number of variables that can skew the result - sometimes I find that elimination diet is the only one to give real guidance in diagnosis....

Hi jox1

Thank you for your reply. I have been eliminating certain foods and gluten was one of them. I visited a Nutitionist who said I had a high sensitivity to it. I eliminated gluten for 2 months and it took me a long time before I felt any better.

I'm now eating sourdough bread and have been absolutely fine with that. It was reading on the IBS Network that the ancient grain sourdough i.e. Spelt are more tolerable as they have low fructan levels.

I am very careful in what I eat and have certainly eliminated some foods as I know I can't tolerate them.

Hi Alicia, I think that these digestive enzymes are interesting but I've no experience, so my advice is to buy good quality.

Here's a link that may interest you:

Thank you Jerry. I've just had a quick look but will need to look at the link on my PC as strangely the text is overwritten. I managed to read the first part which was very interesting.

I think I need to look at my diet again as believe it or not what's good for you I.e. fermented foods is high in Histamine.🤔

Glad we have online resources as it does help.😀

Hi, I've used these ones from Holland & Barrett. Not sure if they match your requirement and not sure how effective they were, but they were recommended by a kinesiolgist hollandandbarrett.com/shop/...

Hi Mise

Thank you very much for your response. I have a Holland & Barrett not too far from me so will have a look.

tbh it does sound like you have uncontrolled histamine reaction......to something. As you have found the body makes histamine as well as processing that which is in diet - but if you have removed anything obvious from diet and still have the problem I would suggest a return to your doc for further investigation / referral to immunology. In the meantime yes you could try the digestive enzymes but I'm not sure how successful it might be. Unfortunately if you do have to see a specialist in the UK it may well be a 6 month wait so just try to hang in there! Good luck

I agree as I also think that's what it is. I've looked online and found quite a few foods that contain high histamine levels. There are still some things I need to remove, just need to print the list of all of the foods. I'm now under investigation for other issues I've had since I had food poisoning back in November last year, I don't want to go through that again and all for rice in a pot I bought from the supermarket. I have found my doctors' surgery to be very good and they seem to get me seen quite quickly which is fortunate.
