Hi there. Not sure if this is been previously discussed on this forum but I'm having troubles with this and it is very important for me. I can't find good skin care products or make up (lipstick, mascara, palette, foundation) or night serum or day cream who are gluten free and safe for us to use. what do you guys use if any? Thanks

Why gluten free products? Please explain why you need to be specific.

Because I'm coeliac?

Are you drinking the stuff? Only hurts if ingested...as CoeliacUK.

Hmm that's an interesting idea..According to Coeliac UK you should not put anything on your skin that contain gluten because is going into your blood stream and triggers the same response as if you ingested it. Are you coeliac? I've been one for 15 years.

According to Coeliac UK you have to ingest Gluten to be ill. What a change inattitude that if put on the skin you get it in your blood stream, not an idea they had a few years ago.

Mikeila You are wise to look for gluten free makeup! Although gluten can not be absorbed through the skin it can be ingested. My daughter buys her lipstick from RedApple lipstick.com and I believe Burt’s Bees is gluten free although I don’t know if it’s sold in the U.K

Have a look at Green People, everything is gluten free. Also Bare Essentials do some nice make-up.

The problem might not be gluten in the ingredients, what will you do if symptoms persist if your cosmetics are gf?

Thank you for your help. However, my question didn't imply that I have a problem. I'm just trying to find some good GF cosmetics. I haven't said I have symptoms of any kind?

The reason I asked is maybe you might be reacting to other ingredients, you never said that you do not react with all cosmetics etc.

Hi,

Thanks for a good post.

I quite understand your wish to err on the side of caution - especially as lipstick in particular can often be inadvertently ingested.

It's really good to learn that there are manufacturers out there who are GF friendly.

According to Coeliac UK cosmetics are not a problem for coeliacs

My consultant said gluten is too large to penetrate the skin. So just be careful you don't ingest any cosmetics around the mouth. 😃

I've always had my skin irritated by cosmetics containing gluten but didn't know why until I was diagnosed with coeliac and dermatitis herpetiformis. I suspect there are lots of people undiagnosed with DH who will be sensitive to gluten- containing cosmetics. Also, having been told by both coeliac U.K. and the hospital that terrible stomach cramps couldn't be caused by malt vinegar etc (which was patently wrong), I now keep a more open mind on what might contribute to problems

I get a contact dermatitis from people who wear cosmetics/ perfumes etc and that is because cosmetics can contain formaldehyde releasers. Other than that I have yet to have any episodes from kissing a female that wears lipstick etc.

For skincare:

stripped skincare (strippedskincare.co.uk/).

For makeup:

green people (greenpeople.co.uk/),

tropic (tropicskincare.co.uk), and

gentle cosmetics (gentlecosmetics.co.uk/).

Some faith in nature products are ok too.

I use 'clinic' because I have sensitive skin .. but never thought in gluten ingredients in make-up.. I was thinking it should bother only in lipsticks because we eat it.

I have noticed my skin has improved a lot since I am in the gluten free diet.

I think the skin shows when you are healthy inside
