I’m new to this, can anyone help?

I’m really confused. I’ve been ill since May last year. Heartburn/ indigestion constantly as well as bad spells of diarrhoea and dreadful fatigue.Nothing relieved my symptoms! In September when I was told I had to wait 4 months to see a consultant I took it upon myself to eliminate acid and most gluten containing foods out of my diet. By December I was seeing great improvements. Had gastroscopy last week and he said he saw signs of flattened villi and I must stop my diet before my tests next week. I tried to stop my diet but oh my goodness my symptoms came back with a vengeance! I don’t think I can have celiac as although I removed most gluten from my diet I did have the occasional treat. When I had my symptoms under control in December and I had a treat, I wasn’t dashing to the loo. Surely if I was celiac, wouldn’t I have been dashing to the loo every time I ate a gluten containing treat?? Sorry for the long post, can anyone help?

I was diagnosed 10 yrs back and the only symptoms I had were fatigue and weight loss, bouts of nausea, shakes weakness like I was going to feint. As soon as I ate i felt better. My villi were not absorbing anything and my calcium levels were the worse. On the gluten free diet for life which means no gluten wheat barley or Rye as eating gluten puts you at higher risks of certain cancers. If I have had cross contamination I've had the odd stomach ache but other than that I wouldn't know so am very careful of what I eat. Your symptoms to me make me think you could be. You really do need to find out if that's what it is so you are sure what to avoid. Would be interested to know when you find out. My go was 99% certain before I had the tests and he was right. Good luck

Thank you for your reply. I really hope my follow up consultant appointment comes through soon.

You don’t need to be celiac for gluten to destroy your health. Watch broken brain series on now. You’ve found your answer yourself. You don’t need consultants.

Hi there if your results show it’s not celiac please ask for a test for Dysbiosis.

Thank you. That’s a condition I am unaware of but I’ll have a look at what it is.

Tracking down the last few triggers can take ages. After tests, try eliminating other groups, like dairy, grains and pulses.

You can survive on the simplest of diets. One method is to establish a safe diet and then add suspect items.

All this change of diet after testing.

It might not be food. Could be pets, home (carpets, curtains) or paint.

If you are coeliac and take a bit of gluten, it can be a few days before you show any symptoms of it, and the symptoms of a single exposure may be different to what you experienced when your diet was full of gluten. I saw someone say their only symptom was a very itchy rash, someone else told me it causes them crippling back & leg pain, others suffer insomnia and constipation. Did you have any of those in the days following your treats?

if you have coeliac disease having gluten doesn't always mean you're going to have severe symptoms.

I know this repy is a bit late, I agree with Cooper27. Some people with coeliac disease get no gastrointestinal effects. They are picked up for other reasons, like chronic anaemia, osteoporosis, fertility and neurological problems. If you do have flattened villi it reduces your capacity to absorb nutrients and can lead to many long term problems.
