Gone gluten free, worried about diabetes.

I have gone Gluten free since being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s.

This has helped me considerably, with my tummy cramps etc.

My anti body results have reduced and so have my all my Thyroid results.

However, I’ve noticed looking at the back of Gluten free items the sugar content is high.

Does a gluten free diet lead to diabetes.

Apologies if I come across a little uneducated, but this is all new to me, Hashimoto’s/Gluten free

Best wishes.

Hi Peanut31,

Welcome to the group.

First, no the question dealing with gluten free items and possible diabetes isn't making you sound uneducated. Some of the gluten free items do have extra sugar/carbs because when something is taken out of a type of food, then the manufactures have to add extra this and extra that to make the item a certain way so the buyer doesn't feel like they are missing something!

Diabetes can happen if you eat the wrong foods, be born with the disease and/or it may run in the family. Please take a look at the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation's website for their free leaflets. They also have a group on HU. Please check both links out.

All leaflets can be downloaded, read and/or listened to at anytime. I hope this helps.

There are anecdotal studies that do show a link between low gluten diets and diabetes, but I think they need to look more closely at why.

Yes gluten free alternatives contain more sugar & fat, and can have less fiber, but if we limit the alternatives, it's not an unhealthy diet.

For the most part, I save the alternatives for when I start to miss something. It's cheaper that way anyway!

Hi Peanuts

Just make sure to keep the ready-made gluten free foods to a minimum! It's a good idea to keep heavily processed foods to a minimum, whether you are eating gluten free or not. Eating a lot of sugar is not a good idea for anyone's health and has been linked to the possibility of increased risk of type 2.

Make sure you are including a wide variety of vegetables and high fibre foods in your diet. Perhaps have a look at sites like the Healthy Eating site on HU for recipe suggestion? There are also lots of recipe books and recipes on line for gluten free meals.

Glad to hear that going gluten free is helping with your symptoms.
