Thanks

Hi Robert, I had the runs with constant headaches and like many others was fobbed off until Dr's realised that I was very anaemic, which's how I was diagnosed as were many others.

Now a word of warning, if you want a proper diagnosis for coeliac then don't give up gluten before you've had the blood test and if positive, a biopsy. We have many members who jumped the gun and felt better only to find an official diagnosis near impossible because of the negative effect that gluten now has on them.

So good luck and you're in good company if you do need a gf diet.

I had bouts of diarrhoea with pain - sometimes I felt sick and faint too. My daughter bought me a book on the effects of gluten and I cut it from my diet. I immediately felt better and told my GP who ran a blood test for coeliac. Sure enough I had the antibodies and was referred to GI Consultant who arranged camera down and camera up tests to determine if it was coeliac. I was told to start eating gluten again ugh and the appointment arrived. I had been eating gluten for 3 weeks and 3 days and wondered if this was long enough as the recommendation is 6 weeks. in my case it was and i was diagnosed coeliac and immediately stopped eating gluten. This was about 18 months ago. Hope this helps. Good luck. Diane

Hi Robert. My symptons started with a constantly bloated tummy, I looked 6 months pregnant most of the time. I visited my GP lots of times only to be told I had IBS each time, the final straw was when he told me it was fat and to consider liposuction, i was 7st 6lb at this point!! The bloating turned into very bad wind which became extremely embarrassing at times and also started to suffer with intermittent bowel changes. E eventually i changed GP's , they ran blood tests and found out I was extremely anaemic, few more tests showed positive Coeliacs disease, i was then sent to hospital for gastro consultation and endoscopy for full diagnosis. I was diagnosed within about 6 weeks of changing GP's , this was the best thing I ever did.

With type 1 (which is known to be linked and coeliac disease should be one of your standard yearly blood screens?), I would expect you to have trouble controlling your blood sugar, with unexplained fluctuations.

For me, I was extremely tired (iron and vit deficiency it turned out), joint pain, diarrhoea and excess wind, and just generally depressed. Was given anti- depressants for years before someone had the bright idea to actually check for coeliac disease!

But you must eat gluten until diagnosed as this is essential for it to show in blood tests / biopsy results. Best of luck!!
