Hi there! I was wondering if excessive phlegm can be one of the many problems related to CD?

That would be the first time I've heard of that. I would suggest checking with your doctor. You might just be phlgmey naturally

Posssibly associated more with problems with dairy than gluten?

Very bad phlegm problems before gave up gluten- had to haul stuff out of my throat with my hands. Helped by garlic pills. No problem when gave up gluten . Sorry if posted reply twice, seems to have vanished.

Hi angelias, it's possible - I certainly notice an increase in phlegm if I've accidentally eaten something I shouldn't have (as a dermatitis herpetiformis sufferer I try to follow a strict gluten-free and lactose-free diet). I do sometimes wonder if it's dairy rather than gluten though that sets it off? (It's not always easy to be dairy free as well as gluten free when out and/or at friends' homes...) Perhaps - if you don't already - you could try to avoid dairy for a while and see if it helps? Good luck :)

I get bad phlegm at the back of my throat. Went for a while after I gave up gluten but recently back. Not sure if I am getting accidentally glutened

It is possible, I used to suffer regularly with Sinusitis and Post-Nasal Drip but have not had an attack since I went on my GF diet.

For years I had that issue with dairy before I connected it to dairy. Positive side is that if coming down to flu it ain't that bad anymore.

I always advice anyone to avoid dairy during the flu as it makes the phlegm stickier. Nobody listens to me ever :D

Very useful advise Justiina. Thank you :). The point is, I just find it so hard to do without my cup of milk and coffee in the morning!!! I could skip lunch but breakfast is a pillar in my day...so many wise people, told me how much our health can be improved by following a dairy-free diet...but I just love milk...tried to do without for a few days last year and as I could not see any change in my health I didn't think twice before going back to my daily cup of "caffé latte"! However, once I receive the results from my biopsy to check if I have CD (maybe beginning of December?) I will do the relevant "tests" to check whether I may be allergic to dairy products. Thank you again ;-)

Hi Angelias I also look forward to my tea on a morning and drink it throughout the day, I use Koko coconut milk or unsweetened almond milk in mine.

It did take a while to get used to it but you do in the end. By the way I have tried several coconut milks and find Koko the best as its flavour is milder, personally I don't like coconut flavour tea and although you can taste it slightly its not a strong coconut flavour. I wait until they are on special offer and buy them in bulk, Morrison's have them for a £1 at the moment.

Hope this helps

Apparently it's not supposed to. There are some scientific conclusions:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/215... - makes sniffly reading!

But then again opera singers avoid dairy before concerts.

And it's good if you don't need almond or coconut milk, considering the environmental cost from burning forests in Indonesia (to create plantations).

Perhaps you could try cutting out lactose, as sometimes this is the part of dairy that causes problems? You can get lactose free milk from the supermarkets.

I can tolerate some lower lactose dairy products like cream and yoghurt, so I have cream in my coffee, and now have fruit teas which don't need milk.
